Question:
Yes. My local club builder had a couple of 5 irons built with TFR shafts. The 5.0 seemed to offer the best balance of control and power for 75% power swing I have been trying to play. But did not cause me any trouble when I went after it at 100% effort. I am taking a little risk assuming the technology behind the TFR shafts will work out in a complete set.
In my opinion… it does. I have 5.5 TFR and I’m happy. I think they do make the mid/long irons a little easier to get up. dsc

How did your swing weights turn out? Did you need to add any weight in the hosel or grips of some irons to compensate? I assume the MP29 irons are much tighter to specs than the 855s heads I have. My heads weigh in at … 3=246 4=252 5=262 6=264 7=274 8=282 9=286 PW=294 SW=300 You can see I have a 10 gram jump from 4 to 5, the 6 is 6 grams lite and the 9 is 2 grams lite. Otherwise the set has a nice spread that will weigh in very well with the rifle shafts on 1/2 increments. I figure I will tip pin the 6 iron 4 grams and the 9 iron 2 grams. Not exactly sure yet, but I think I’m gonna be running in the D4 range across the set. - Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Thanks Dan… I am looking forward to the reshafted 855s heads. They played very well with senior flex graphite shafts, although a little whippy and less accurate because of the soft flex. I figure a nice parallel tip set of TFR 5.0 shafts with Lamkin Crossline grips, could find a happy home in a number of parallel tip heads, cavity cast or otherwise. The 855s will be the first stop, and then they will take their best shot against my Ping i3 0 size with the JZ stiff shafts. cheers RJ

Does anyone play Rifle flighted shafts in their irons? How do you like the "theory" in practice? How do you like the flex rating you picked versus the flex you used in other irons shafts? I figure, with a average distance with my 5 iron of about 170, and a semi quick tempo, I am in the 5.5 to 6.0 flex range. Because I will leave the shafts a 1/2" over standard, I am leaning toward the 6.0 setup.
I’ve got Rifle 5.5 shafts in my Mizuno Pro IIs. They’re a touch softer than the TTDG S300s (equiv to Rifle 5.8) I used to play in my previous irons. I’ve got a 5 iron swingspeed in the mid 80s range with an honest 180-190 yd average carry. I switched to Rifles because I like their distinctive "snap" through impact. The pro who fitted me kept insisting that 6.0s would suit me better. From previous testing, I found the 6.0s too stiff so went with the 5.5s. Couldn’t be happier with them. Moral of this story is to try them out yourself before laying down green. Also, don’t let the ego get in the way of picking a softer shaft if that’s what you’re comfortable swinging. Be cautious, the rifles are a great shaft but they run stiffer than others. I hit an 8I about 145yds. I was playing Truetemper Dynamic gold S300 when I switched to Rifle 6.0 The rifles were noticibly stiffer. I could probably get away with 5.5s
i found that so many people say the same thing to me and they cannot beleive i play with 6.5’s given my not so large physique. fact is that if the clubs are built properly to meet the required flex in CPM’s then a Rifle Lite 6.5 at 280cpms is going to be exactly the same stiffness as a Dynamic Gold S300 at 280cpms

Scott… Thanks and thanks to everyone who posted. I decided to go with the 5.0 and trim up a blank 1 shaft for the SW. cheers RJ … – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Although I’m not currently playing them, I’ve built quite a few sets and played with them a number of times. They do help a little, and I think the most noticable difference vs. standard rifles is in the long irons. At least for me, they did seem to help get the ball up a little. As far as flex goes, if you hit your 5 iron 170 yards on average, the 6.0 will be way to stiff for you. I’m not sure what you are considering as standard length, but even with a 38" 5 iron, I would say that you should go with 5.0. These play a lot stiffer than people think, and Precision finally modified their original fitting and designation charts to reflect this. I hit my 5 iron 175 on average with a fairly smooth tempo, and the 5.0 is perfect. If you have a quick swing, the 5.5 might work, but could be a touch firm. You could go with the 5.5 and soft-step them, which will put you somewhere in the middle. Scott Does anyone play Rifle flighted shafts in their irons? How do you like the "theory" in practice? i use lite 6.5’s but i wouldnt have a clue whether they are better than any other shaft.. Overall my new clubs were better than my old ones which were some 14 years old when i replaced them. AFAIK the advantage of the rifle lites is the liteness of them and for the price more reliable than graphite.

RJ, I play the Tour Flighted Rifles; the 5.5’s. I had them built about 2 years ago and I like these clubs better than my old set of Ping Eye-2’s. For me, it seems as though I hit them straighter. It took me almost 2 years to get used to the Pings before they felt comfortable to hit. They were not sized for me though so that could have been the problem. When I chose the 5.5’s, I was viewing the swing speed chart after I found out my swing speed. I did not compare shafts flex to other shafts since I had only played a few different ones and was not sure what they had on them. I just checked my swing speed and figured the 5.5’s fit my speed with a little room at the top end in case my swing speed increases. Old game setup; Ping Eye-2’s, Titleist Professionals; and game hovered at 102 to 108 New game setup; Golfsmith heads with Rifle shafts, Triton Hi-Performance ball; and game play now hits at 95-100. I actually got my first 94 last year using this setup. My goal for the rest of the year is to hit a 92. Theory behind the Rifles? I don’t remember what it was. I’ve hit the 6.5s in a set of Australian blades Maxfli TM92s. Nice clubhead, hated the shaft. The shaft seemed heavier that DG S300s, and definitely not as stiff as my Rifles in my MP14s. YMMV cheers RJ …
