Ping Chipo

Question:

has anyone out there seen a Ping Chipo?

Response:

Sure…even have one sitting in the corner of the room here. After playing it for a while..I just decided to use my 7 iron instead. I have even seen a left handed Ping Chipo. My Major (Police) plays "from the other side", and uses it alot around the green.

Response:

It’s a pretty bizarre club.  The Ping Chippo is a dedicated chipping club, with the loft of a 6 or 7 iron.  I don’t know why you wouldn’t just use a 6 or 7 iron instead since it looks exactly like one…but I’m sure someone uses it.  I personally have never seen anyone with it in their bag though.  You can buy one from Edwinwatts.com…the site probably has a picture of it also. If I recall, it was (is?) one of those chipper/putter things that Ping made several years ago. I haven’t seen one in years – and don’t know if they still make it. — http://home.midsouth.rr.com/joecartpath RSG Roll Call: http://u1.netgate.net/~kirby34/rsg/reedj.htm

The Ping Chip-o is a club designed for chipping.  If memory serves, this club was first designed way back in the days of the Ping Eye (not the Eye2) clubs, and maybe even before that, like back in the Karsten3 days. It’s an unwieldy looking thing, with sort of a shallow, but unusually long head.  The loft of about a seven iron on a shaft about the length of a wedge. Seems to me it’d be easier and more practical to simply use a 7-iron for those shots, especially considering this club is not designed to be used with full swings, so is usefulness (such as it is) is limited to just chipping (unlike a 7-iron). If ever there were a golf club that seems to have been dreamed up by the marketing department, this has gotta be it. Randy

And I went to check out a picture of it and the price tag said $89! It was basically a $29 specialty club with…. a $60 Ping name on it. :) Tim — http://www.golfstockmarket.com – Fantasy Golf Stock Market http://www.tritongolf.com – Premium Golf Balls

While I agree with you that the Chip-o and its brethren are the golfing equivalent of a mo-ped, their utility extends beyond mere chipping.  I’ve seen them used in bunkers (with a full swing, no less) to great effect, and even for bump-and-runs from about 50 yards. Not that I’d be caught dead with one of them in my bag… Remsleep
