Mo Norman ?

Question:

Does anyone know the story of Mo Norman? I’ve heard he was a canadian golf phenom who was also autistic. He had an unconventional swing but was nothing short of amazing. I guess he dropped off the PGA tour because he didn’t like the people or the attention. (?) Apparently he now does exhibitions for Nike. (?) Can someone add to this or clarify who he was etc. Shawn in Cleveland

Response:

Shawn wanted to know about Moe.. Moe is a legend in golf. "Pipeline", as he has been called, has an unorthodox swing, is terribly shy and insecure, and could be the best pure ball striker on the planet. It would take too long to tell his story here.. I suggest you check out your local library, and see if they have Golf Digest from 1 or 2 years ago.. they had a cover story on Moe, and a fairly detailed story on him. Moe was living in penury until the chairman of Titleist heard about it; he put Moe on a $5,000 a month contract. Class move! Kevin

Hi Shawn, The story on Moe is a long one. Does anyone know the story of Mo Norman? I’ve heard he was a canadian golf phenom who was also autistic. He had an unconventional swing but was nothing short of amazing.

It may be unconvetional, however, a lot of people including pros say he has the best swing.  It’s always straight. I guess he dropped off the PGA tour because he didn’t like the people or the attention. (?)

He didn’t like some of the attention.  It’s probably more of the PGA didn’t like him. A couple of the stories are: 1) In the middle of a tournament the temperature changed so he decided to change in the cart. 2) He asked his caddie how he should approach a par 4.  The caddie said Driver and Wedge.  He then proceeded to tee off with a Wedge.  Went to the fairway and used his Driver, he put in on the green for regulation. Apparently he now does exhibitions for Nike. (?)

Yes he does. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Can someone add to this or clarify who he was etc. Shawn in Cleveland

I don’t think they say he has the best swing.  I think they always refer to him as the best ball striker. I guess he dropped off the PGA tour because he didn’t like the people or the attention. (?) He didn’t like some of the attention.  It’s probably more of the PGA didn’t like him.

Moe Norman has a shyness problem that has always effected him.  The first tournament he won he hid until everyone left then he went to get his winners check. David Golf Homepage http://www.geocities.com/Colosseum/3580

Moe is not autistic , shy but not autistic, Moe never dropped off the PGA but was forced to quit because of his antics , the clothes he wore . Moe refused to change. Dan

Response:

I’ve heard two things about him: – At exhibitions he allways asks the gallery "How high should I hit the ball?", but never "How far?" (he can hit it any length he wants to. -He withdrew from a tournament after hitting his first drive, because people were applauding too loud…. Golf Digest did an amazing piece on Moe Morman last year around this time. The article was about four pages in length and went inot great detail about the extrordinary life that Moe has led. "Sixty minutes" also did a story on him. Did you know that the President of Titliest provides Moe with $5000/month and does not have to do anything for it. The President said he is a living legend and has done a lot for golf. When Moe heard that he was given this monthly gift…he replied "Great, amazing…Titliest …they’re my favorite ball.." A Canadian Hero…Moe Norman

Hi, most of your above are close to the legends about Moe, but just a click or two off.  For instance, the story about the wedge and driver actually took place with Hockey Hall of Famer Stan Mikita after he retired and became a golf pro. Etc. Etc.  The most accurate account of Moe Norman’s life is in the book, Feeling of Greatness by Tim O’Conner.  It is excerpted in the December 1995 Golf Digest which also treats his life story in detail. As for me, I believe Moe to be a new friend and don’t believe him to be infirmed.  He is very very cautious with people to be sure.  I am proud to have been invited to produce the Moe Norman and Natural Golf video that Golf Digest sells.   If you really want to know the man. …get a copy of that.  He speaks for himself on it…quite eloquently, I might add. Enjoy him, he is a treasure. Peter Fox Natural Golfmaster

I read  a story about him hitting balls with the driver off the practice tee, and some pros were watching him and one of them (not sure who) asked him to let him try his unothodox swing and put the ball on the same wooden tee that Norman was hitting balls off the other pro hit his ball and broke the tee and mo said: " Oh dear you broke my tee, I loved that tee, I had it for seven years "  that’s how precise he was. An other story Mo played on a tournament in canada once and on the first round he for putted a par three and the nex day a reporter asked him before his tee shot on the same hole: " Are you going to five putt this time MO ? " Mo turned around and said " Ain’t putting today " , he hit his tee shot and blaaam !!! an ace . You can check all these stories in detail on the golf digest magazine they are all telling you about.

I have had the honour of whatching Mr. Norman hit golf balls for about 8 years. Mr. Norman (Mo to few who are his close freinds) would hit balls until his fingers bled in the warm months outside. Then in the winter months pratice indoors by hitting balls against mattress in his apartment. In all the time I whatched him I only talked to him once, when his best friend Gus Maue introduce us. He is very kind and gentleman to the fullest degree!!!! The notion about autism is not really understood to this day but as a child he was in some sort of accident in which he took a blow to the head and this is why he is the way he is.

I believe he was out playing on a snow sled and was hit by a car and dragged a considerable distance. David Golf Homepage http://www.geocities.com/Colosseum/3580

I have a video of Moe Norman hitting balls at a driving range in Myrtle Beach.  He pulls out his driver and starts hitting shots off a tee.  The person doing the recording makes a statement about him not breaking the tee and leaving it in the ground.  Moe responds with "this is the only tee I’ve ever had, used it since I first started playing". I know he has a little book he writes down how many balls he hits each day and he can tell you how many balls he ever hit.  In the video he keeps repeating he hit over 2 million balls, but I heard he is up to 3 million now. I also heard a rumor that the only person Ben Hogan ever stopped to watch hit golf balls was Moe Norman. David Golf Homepage http://www.geocities.com/Colosseum/3580

There is one picture I saw that tells a lot about Moe Norman. It was taken during the Canadian Skins Game two or three years ago and published in one of the American golf magazines. It shows four golfers standing together and intently watching Moe hit balls. Their names: Couples, Price, Norman and Els. Pretty good ad for his talent.
