Question:
There is at least one instance of a PGA Tour player being DQ in this manner. I do not recall the player or course (English Turn in New Orleans?), but I remember the announcers commenting on it. As I remember, the caddy did not check before starting the round and they only had one sleeve of balls. When the player hit the last one in the lake, the caddy made a mad dash to the locker room but couldn’t get back in time. I’m not sure whether you would be allowed to borrow a ball from a competitor under the rule against sharing equipment. Anyone know how that would be ruled. The same brand/same compression rule is actually a local rule adopted for PGA and other competitions.

(Insert sophomoric comment here) Roy McAvoy almost ran out of (golf) balls in "Tin Cup" but I never knew there was a specific rule.<<< There is no rule about the number of balls you can take with you during your round but if you run out, and are in a tournament, you could be DQed if you are unable to finish the round with the same type of ball you played the whole round. In other words, you wouldn’t be allowed to borrow a ball from a fellow competitor unless he played the exact same kind of ball as you and was willing to share. You also probably would not be given time to run to the pro shop to buy more.

Only on the LPGA
