Question:
Hi Everyone, I have been lurking here on and off for a few months now and i thought it was time to say hi and introduce my fuzzy babies!! My name is Min, I am 21 and I have 4 kitties (lol…I’m Min and I’m a cataholic): Melissa (17, calico angora), Sassafras (8, gray tiger), Polka Dot (2, tuxedo), and Furman (2, maine coon and gray tiger mix?). We all live in Massachusetts in an apartment that seems to have some sort of magnetic pull that attracts stray kitties (which is how Furman and P. Dot came to live here). We are currently feeding one black and white male stray who might have a new home soon since it is getting so cold outside:-D Now, on to my pudy question! My mom gave all of the cats new plates in honor of Furman’s second birthday, but they are ceramic (made in China) I could have sworn I heard somewhere that cats should only eat out of glass or metal plates to prevent feline acne, but I can’t find any info online anywhere. Do you guys think it is okay for them to use the ceramic plates? Thank you!!! Minnie:o)
Response:
Ceramic should be fine. I believe it’s plastic that seems to be the biggest problem. Someone correct me if I’m wrong here. Welcome to you and your furry family! Hazel Az

Welcome Min. We’re all cataholics in here. We’d be on the twelve step program, but we don’t want to be cured. Your kitties sound wonderful and varied. I bet they keep you hopping. About the food dishes. Only Plastic has a tendency to hold food grease, which is what causes kitty acne. The pores are sealed with glass and ceramics. So your ceramic dishes should be fine. Come to think of it, my cats could use more dishes… nope they will cause zits the size of golf balls and you have to send those dishes to me and I’ll make sure that no kitties use them.

Welcome, Minnie! First off, let me tell you I’ve not the faintest idea what the answer is, but I DO want to say howdy and welcome to the ng. I’m Victoria, and my guys (known as the Mafia) are Sir Simba (orange tabby with too much attitude) and Matumbo (diabetic grey tabby). We hope to hear about all sorts of adventures about your gorgeous four real soon. Welcome! You sound just right for this community, we look forward to reading the antics of your gang! BTW, ceramic is ok. Like others mentioned, plastic is what’s thought to cause kitty acne. We buy people’s bowls at Target (the cobalt blue ones), they’re way cheaper than cat’s bowls and they’re 100% safe (i.e. no lead, or other nasties). Cheers. — Victor M. Welcome to the newsgroup Minnie! My Juliet used to have acne too. The vet put her on a course of antibiotics and told me to bathe her chin area twice a day with warm salty water. Apparently the salt acts as a disinfectant. Juliet still gets acne from time to time, and when she does I bathe the area twice a day in warm salty water. At one point I had 7 cats (between my roommate and me). Where in Mass. do you live? I’m from Boston originally (now living in the San Francisco area). I could have sworn I heard somewhere that cats should only eat out of glass or metal plates to prevent feline acne I’ve never heard that ceramic dishes cause acne, only plastic. Which reminds me that I need to get new dishes for my two! Welcome, Joyce

Re: feeding bowls, just about every cat I’ve known has eaten from ceramic with no ill effects. If your lords and masters are lucky enough to have their own personal bowls (provided as gifts, no less – they have your mother very well trained!) then I think they should be allowed to enjoy using them. Yes..we got her at six weeks!! She is more like my sister than a pet! She has been through a lot with my family, too. Lots of moves to new houses and she even survived the addition of three new kitties and a German Shepard/Doberman mix (temporarily lol).

Welcome Min! (actually, that sounds good if you say it out loud!) Your kitties sound great – hope we’ll get to see some pictures soon. I know what it’s like to grow up with a kitty for a sibling, our cats (now gone to the RB) were three by the time I was born. Originally from Melbourne, Australia, I now live in London, UK with my wonderful fiance Ed, and our two British S/hair Tortie furbabies Penang & Karahi who were 1 in September. Glad you’ve joined the group – you won’t find a nicer bunch anywhere (says she who got scorchingly flamed on a NG elsewhere recently). Regards Elizabeth Penang & Karahi
