Response:

If anyone has any ideas/tips re treating plantar fasciitis I would be very grateful to hear of them . I am using twice daily ice packs trying to rest affected heel and have got orthotic support in shoe, but progress is frustratingly slow.   Tia.

Response:

I messed around, and didn’t run for 2 months when I had the problem. Finally went to the doctor and he prescribed Relafen, an arthritis drug. Took them for 10 days without running.  Pain was actually gone in only a few days.  Started running after that (not big miles, but I didn’t baby it too much).  Haven’t had a problem since.  Wished I had seen the doctor sooner. If you’re not into meds, I think the only solution is time.

I had 18 months off w/o running, tried everything but surgery.  Active release (a form of soft-tissue therapy) finally fixed it. Alan.

Sometimes it

doesn’t last and might be repeated a few months later. But twice and out for that treatment as too many times causes other problems.    Cut a quarter sized hole in the inserts of your shoe to avoid pinpoint pressure on that heel bone.    Theories abound as to causes and cures. It’s a common athletic injury and it usually goes away. Frequently there’s associated tightness on that side and it can be anywhere from the Achilles on up to the hip, usually the Achilles. Avoid the tendency to stretch too often as that can contribute.    Bottom line: If you want to run through it you can do so by taping the foot properly. I’ve used five pieces of duct tape in a modification of the way professional trainers do it. 1) Three on the bottom that go up about three inches on each side. 2)One around the Achilles and out to the point of the farthest one of the three. 3) One over the instep to tie it all together. Positioning of this last one needs to be adjusted to the individual as it can produce cramping on longer runs. It can take 12-18 months for it to go away totally.
