Question:
I recently had the same thing happen to me. At 37 l thought I was possibly having a heart attack. Turned out it was strained cartlidge. The pain radiated to my back. My doctor prescribed a muscle relaxer chlor something and told me to take 800 mg of Ibuprofin 4 time a day. I did this, laid off golf for a week and can now play almost a full round without pain. (2 weeks later). I do take 800 mb of Ibuprofin before each round of golf to scare off the pain. Good luck!

I torn a cartlidge in the front, between my lower two ribs very close to the center. This was the longest, most painful injury I’ve ever had. Took 3-4 months to recover. Did the damage at the driving range…. Rick Lindsay

I had the almost exact thing Rick described just under the rib cage. It started on the course and I ripped it on the range. That night I could not roll-over without screeming. Mine healed pretty quickly though (1 week).

Mark, I had the same thing happen to me – also from hitting more balls than I was accustomed to hitting. It also took me a couple of months to recover. This happened to me after I stopped weight training. I now make sure that I do my training at least a couple of times a week. I don’t train with heavy weights. I use 2 -3 sets per exercise, 8 – 12 reps. I do an all around fitness routine. It takes less than a half hour. Any book on weight training will give you suggested exercises, or you can hunt out the magazine "Men’s Health", which usually has a couple of good articles each month. By the way, after I resumed weight training, my distance came back to what it used to be. I thought I had lost distance simply because I was getting older. It turned out that I was losing distance simply because I was getting lazy and had stopped working out. Some points to remember; Don’t start training until you’re fully healed. Do lost of stretching before and after working out, and also before and after golf. Use light weights at first, or you will strain yourself again. You have the rest of your life to get strong. You don’t have to use heavy weights at first. In fact, you never have to use heavy weights if you’re training for fitness. Weight training can become as addictive as golf. Remember that you’re using weights as an aid to golf, not as a goal in itself. Don’t go from hitting some balls a couple of times a week, to hitting 200 balls a day. Work up gradually. Hope this helps. Tom B. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Please post reply if you have this extremely painful condition. I hit too many golf balls at the range this year, approximately 200 a day, and tore cartlidge in my rib-cage. When the first pain appeared I ignored it. Then, right after I bought my new woods and irons, I tore it big-time while hitting balls at the range. I have been out of commission for nearly two months. It is very frustrating not playing, but I am almost ready to resume the game. There is still some minor pain, and I have tried to hit a few balls, but I am scared and timid. I hit like crap now, but I hope I will regain my swing soon. Last week in the PGA tournament on TV, I heard that Mark Calcavechia also had the same ailment. It actually made me feel better, because I have spoken to many other golfers and none of them have had this problem. I felt alone, and inadequate that my body was the only one that could break down like this. I will allways pull for Calcavechia now that we share a common bond, or pain. If anyone else has had this, please tell me if Golf caused it, how long to recoup, does it come back again, or anything else you feel important. Thanks in advance, Mark
