Air Deflectors

Question:

As stated over and over agin by the majority of respondents, they make great bug catchers.

Mine does also. However, I have measured a gas milage increase of about 1mph from about 7.5 to about 8.5. It took me a few trips to find the proper angle to set it at. YMMV. [...] The question in my mind is that if a deflector would be useful, why don’t the builders incorporate them into the front cap designs.  Ugly, I know, but most fivers are not great examples of the designers art, anyway.

The class 8 tractors almost always have a trailer in tow. Therefore the have integral air deflectors. My van does NOT normally have the trailer behind it. So I DON’T want to have that extra drag when not towing. I suspect most pickups would be in the same situation my van is – normally not towing. Eric

Response:

I have a question since i have just recently purchase a 5th wheel jayco….  i see these air deflectors on other trucks pulling 5th wheels… My question is do these deflectors really do work?   I asked the people who i bought the 5th wheel from about this piece of equipment and they claim it was a waste of money.

David, Perhaps something can be learnt from the trucking industry.  Twenty years ago, when I was involved in that sector, air foils were just being introduced.  They were mounted to the roof of the highway tractors that pulled vans.  There were as many designs as there were trucks. To-day, ALL highway tractors come from the factory with an integrated wing/air foil on the roof.  I do not recall the mileage increases we experienced at the time but we retrofitted our entire fleet because the cost benefit analysis warranted same. The point here is that if air can be diverted around and over that square boxy frontal area of the trailer, there would be less strain on whatever is doing the pulling.  This should translate to increased stability, improved mileage, and reduced cleaning. This begs the question of how do you accomplish this –  something on the tow vehicle or something on the trailer? Myron

Response:

Actually no, I tend to find people that spend money on wings the type of people who have the disposable income to spend $500 on a device that they think just makes there truck look like the big rig or as you stated "cool". Not penny pinching folks.  A friend of mine put one of those chrome wings on his crew cab dually and he pulls a drag boat that is below his tailgate.  He just liked the way it looks and it matched his boats wing.

This may be an exercise in Futility but if first you don’t succeed try try again although I am not the original poster I am interested in the efficacy of Air Deflectors. I would like to see a response from any lurkers out there who might have installed one. Does it do anything. I have met people who say yes and others who claim it keeps the bugs off. I have seen three types and wonder whether anyone has had experience with these? 1. a curved Aluminum scoop 2. a flat fiberglass 3. a molded fiberglass V (made and sold in Canada)

Erich

When I buy something for my rig, it generally gives me pleasure. A new toy to use on the road, something I enjoy trying or using, even a wing on top.  To me that’s a pleasure expense, as opposed to a running expense, such as diesel, breakdown repairs, and things I absolutely must have to continue down the road.   Ya might even call it an investment in fun. I’m not sure what you expected.  We had one (later found out it was probably not positioned ideally.  It rattled and made not perceptible difference in performance.  I gave it away and if I had another I’d give that one away, too.   Far too much monkeying around to get it right, only to have to take it off when not towing the trailer in order to get the truck in the barn. Lon, this was not a slam but a comment emphasizing difference of opinion, with an attempt at humour, which is obviously something you don’t have a sense of.  (Is that a dangling participle I smell?) Lighten up, this ain’t the UN, we’re not solving the problems of the world, and for most of us is enjoyable and enlightening.  On the other hand, if you disapprove, why, just sue ‘em. Canoli

As stated over and over agin by the majority of respondents, they make great bug catchers. Having said that, today on the way to P’Cola I saw a fiver with a deflector almost right up against the fiver.  What this rascal had done was to use the middle set of stake pockets on his pickup to locate the deflector and it’s associated braces. It was so close to the fiver that it looked to me as though it would be difficult to make almost any kind of turn without the fiver and the deflector contacting. If anything, however, would improve economy, this thing looked like it might. The question in my mind is that if a deflector would be useful, why don’t the builders incorporate them into the front cap designs.  Ugly, I know, but most fivers are not great examples of the designers art, anyway. What do you suppose are ‘pleasure’ aspects of a wing for the top of your truck? Erich

Response:

David, the following is my experiance; A number of years ago I pulled a 18ft Jayco travel trailer with a 302 CI Ford Granada. (young and foolish). I had trouble maintaining highway speed, if I did not have a tail wind. I made a very small deflector and put it on the roof of the car. I could then maintain highway speed and I got better gas milage.     I now have a 97 Coachmen Catalina fifth wheel (13ft high with airconditioner). I pull it with a 97 GMC 3/4 ton HD, 454 CI engine, and a 4:10 axle. I would not travel without the deflector. It keeps the bug of front of the trailer. I get a about 1 mpg CDN more and I have no problems with pulling power with or without the deflector. Less wind resistance, less strain on the engine and transmission.        The deflector I use mounts on the roof by the doors, forward of the extended cab. Size is 24 inches high and 60 inches wide. My next one will mount on the rails of the truck bed. In this location it will work better and one will not hear any wind noise. To roughly adjust it, I would suggest putting it at an angle that would draw a line about 2 feet above the trailer.        No you probably will not get 20 or 30% fuel savings. You will most likely get between 0 and 5%. No you will not pay for it very quickly through your fuel savings. Yes, they work even when very small or poorly mounted. I also suspect if you mounted it very poorly, it would cost you more for gas. I hope my experiance is of some help.

Response:

Dumbass he just explained that he gets pleasure adding things to his rig. Key word is "HE" He didn’t tell you that you would get pleasure.  THINK How many pairs of naked lady mudflaps do you see?  Do they save gas? Do they do a better job than plain black and chrome mudflaps?  What is your return on investment?  How about hood ornaments lets say a flying lady?  Do the give you pleasure?  Well if you said yes you might want to remove it before you sit.   No really I think the merits of a little chrome wing are far more aesthetic than a huge fiberglass wall.  Functionality is different and results may be different.  But I see dozens of duallys that have never seen a trailer with those chrome wings.  Why because they give the owner pleasure.  So please remove your hedonistic head from your ass (then the flying lady hood ornament)

– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Damn. I was completely unaware that I could get pleasure from a big ugly wing strapped to my truck. Please tell me more. Being the hedonistic person that I am, I’m always on the lookout for new pleasures. — bill Theory don’t mean squat if it don’t work.

Yes, pay close attention and heed every last word of Mr. Sill’s request!  God forbid if Mr. Sill has to jump through a few hoops to read something that might interest him.  Mr. Sill is the official style/format/content police on this NG, so in the future send an e-mail to him before you post to make sure that all of your settings are correct.  This will result in Mr. Sill being less angry about having to read something in a badly formatted way.  And whatever we do around here, we don’t want to make Mr. Sill angry. Three things 1st  I apologize for Will’s rude behavior.  He also obviously doesn’t know how to set up his newsreader.  Your message came out perfect in my newsreader. 2nd Will stated it was a waste of money and then went on to say unless of course it is installed properly and you drive a lot.  He assumes that you can’t  install one correct or find someone that can and he also assumes you don’t take long vacations over the summer or snowbird or that your maybe going to fulltime. 3rd He also assumes that you don’t want trailer with a bug free front, better control and handling, increased fuel economy, etc. In other words please realize that Will knows more about his Depends Undergarments that trailers.  His excuse that you won’t get your money back doesn’t cut it.  I can’t think of anything I put in my trailer including the trailer that I can put a cost justification on.
