Which Irons?

Question:

Have you used forged clubs before? If not, hit some at the pro shop or range to be sure they are what you want. If you go the Mizuno route, the Mizuno Sure’s get some of the highest ratings by users out there. Check them out at http://www.golfreview.com/Irons/Mizuno+T-Zoid+Sure+Irons/PRD_60958_29… spx

Response:

Thanks for the feedback guys. I’m on the hunt. Then maybe some sport specs, an old laker jersey and some blonde hair dye. I’ll be the one diving in the drink after the ball. DaveA

I am a 25 handicap and recently went through what you’re looking at.  You’re looking at clubs that are blades, which are a bit more difficult to hit.  I bought the TA5’s and absolutely love them.  They’re very easy to hit and get distance on.  I’m not at the level of being able to work the ball, but if I ever get there, I always have the blades I can go back to.  I don’t think you’ll be unhappy with the TA5’s. john

The TA3s are maybe a bit more suited to a low handicapper and you may find the TA5s a bit easier to play with (just a suggestion). I have the TA5s and they are really good irons. I would also recommend the Cleveland Quadpro fairway woods. I used to play with Apex irons and they are also good – try them all out if you can. Agreed!!! I have had the Cleveland TA-5’s now for about 2 months now and absolutely love them.  And paid only about $450.  And that included a Cleveland Golf bag!!! I got the stiff shafted model which  i have found very easy to get the ball up on a variety of lies  I can honestly say this is one of the best irons i have ever hit and for the price, simply unbelievable.  With the 2003 models coming out, you might be able to steal these babies under $400 if you look around. Never really thought about Cleveland products until i demoed this set. And i also purchased one of their sand wedges and have been pleased with it to date…although it is totally rusted(which is what it is designed to do) Eric Eric – take a look at the Quadpro fairway woods (not the ones with the rails on the soles). You should be able to pick them up for a bargain. They are smaller heads than some so you may not like them but they hit the ball a mile (have a look at the disclaimer sticker on the shafts). In my opinion the Cleveland clubs are very good value especially as you say you go for ‘last year’s models’.

Zponge, Thanks for the tip.  Sounds tempting, but i got myself some Taylor made 3 and 5 woods recently, so i have to be a good boy and not even think about anything else for a LONG TIME!!! Just for curiosity sake, though, i wonder if the Quadpro’s are available in lefty…we get such few choices and i was so pleased to find the TA-5’s available so readily. take care eric

<< I am a 20 handicap looking into Ben Hogan Apex, TA3 or a set of Mizuno’s I know nothing about. Suggestions? Find a dealer who allows you to swing the clubs in question, preferably on an outside range, so that you can get a better sense of how the clubs perform. I have been playing Mizunos for the past several years and love them.  But you should experiment to find what feels best for you. And make sure that whatever you buy, the clubs are fitted to you specs! Best, Ken Meltzer

All three are top level, pro quality branbds.  Any decent dealer or pro shop will let you demo the clubs to see which ones you like.  I wouldn’t buy anything w/o a demo under playing conditions first.  A range session will weed out things, but playing is really the best way to tell what’s right. Ask for a demo set, and try to get 2 or 3 rounds in w/ them. BTW, all three manufacturers produce top quality wedges that will supplement the irons. Just on looks, I like the Cleveland TA3s and the wide variety of wedges. — Doug Main
