Traveling with Clubs

Question:

- Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – … I used to use a real big, heavy, but very secure hard case made by SKB.  They are quite popular but don’t fit in all cars and are a pain in the neck to lug around everywhere.  However, when it comes to not worrying about your clubs being bent by the airlines AND you need your full golf bag, you can’t beat them. Now, just recently, I bought a much smaller hard case by Travalite. It is only about six inches in diameter (!) and much lighter, but still a hard case so your clubs won’t be bent in transit.  The way this works is that you don’t bring your golf bag… you take all your clubs out and put them in the Travalite, which doubles as a golf bag. It is quite ackward to carry, but it is great on a golf cart.  I highly recommend it!  Travalite is not the only manufacturer, but it’s the only one that was carried by the golf shop I frequent.  Ask around. /LesC Did you get the larger version?  I’ve been think about this type also. I’ve been traveling a lot since I retired last year, and the hard case is really a pain. Pete Z.

I got the version that carries 14 clubs.  They have a smaller one that only holds 9.  I haven’t looked at that one.  I can’t find myself sacrificing five clubs for a round!  Go to a golf shop and check it out and carry it to see how much more convenient it can be for you, knowing how much larger and heavier the hard case would be. Good luck! /LesC Path: news.uni-stuttgart.de!news.stealth.net!newsfeed.song.fi!news.cc.tut.fi!news feed.media.kyoto-u.ac.jp!newscon02.news.prodigy.com!prodigy.com!newsfeed.cw ix.com!feed.news.qwest.net!news.uswest.net.POSTED!u_n_a__c_ancel Newsgroups: comp.lang.c,rec.sport.golf X-No-Archive: yes Lines: 2 NNTP-Posting-Host: 209.3.144.105 Xref: news.uni-stuttgart.de control:40509026 autocancel

Get a Club Glove.  Which model to get depends upon the size of your golf bag.  A carry bag fits nicely in the "Burstproof" model. Scott

Murphy I flew between Colorado and North Carolina – with a soft case.  I did have to have my long putter outside of my bag – but in my case – to fit. Having a golf bag did not slow me down at all.  Where the hassle is nowadays is with carry on (or for vultures, carrion) luggage.  Avoid as much as you can to get through the lines quickly.  Since I chose to turn in my luggage anyway, adding an extra bag was no more work. After years of renting clubs on site I decided to get my self a carrier (soft), and have travelled a couple of times with it since 9/11.  No hassle at all.  The new ones all have wheels, which makes them more mobile than earlier ones.  Before 9/11 I rarely checked baggage if I could possibly avoid it so carrying clubs was a big hassle.  After 9/11 I usually have to check something anyway, so checking two bags instead of 1 is no big deal.  I expect theft is the biggest risk.  I’ve still rarely had to show anything to walk off with checked luggage, so plan to be at baggage claim when the clubs come out.  If you are flying to a golf destination (like Phoenix or Florida in the winter), be prepared to see a lot of black golf bags come out and mark yours with a distinctive tag or strap to make it easier to find.  I picked a soft carrier because my clubs are not all that valuable (and as a club maker I can easily replace any that are broken), and the soft ones are lighter, cheaper, and easier to wrestle in and out of small trunks (watch out for smaller rental cars and big carriers!)  One of the things I looked at and didn’t buy but probably would have if I had more expensive clubs is an inflatable cushion to stick around your clubheads in a carrier. Basically works like those inflatable splints for emergency care.  Not worth the trouble for my clubs but something to consider if you are worried them getting banged up. —

Yeh, I did too, the first time I flew after 9-11.  But it turns out the hard cover case is a great place to put the stuff you would carry on, but don’t want to, because of security.  More protection than a suitcase. Hit em good out there.  Try that new Paiute course and let us all know how it is!  That’s the one where Annika and Karrie played. Pete Z

Murphy Thanks everyone.  You all convinced me to take the sticks along.  I would rather spend $100 on the course than on the casino floor.  I had all kinds of senarios where my bag was gone through with a fine toothed comb and I forgot I had some golf things in there that I forgot about, and well there was Hell to pay for that oversite. Again, thanks. Murphy

I’ve flown  three times since Sept. 11, with clubs. No problem, haven’t been asked to open them up or anything.  And I’ve flown out of DC are all three times.  Have a hard case finally, but  I’m getting tired of lugging it around – anyone have one of those Travelite cases? Pete Z

It’s no hassle at all.  Just don’t expect to carry any of them on with you. You don’t go through security with your sticks – they take them at the ticket counter.

I traveled with clubs (in SKB hard shell case) in early October from ATL to SJC and had no problems. Cooper ‘I live for those crisp, pinching iron shots." (me) "The more I know, the less I understand." (Don Henley)

I flew into Fort Walton Beach, FL, in October. No problem at all – my clubs were locked in a hard case. And the airport there is on an Air Force base! — Joe Cartpath – www.joecartpath.com

Response:

No problems here either…..used a hard case to go from Portland to Tucson and back. Only real difficulty was when I left a green-fixer in my pocket, which raised some eyebrows with security.  I had them throw it away. Oh…and be prepared to take your shoes off.  I had to both ways, even before this latest raghead incident.

M&M, Since you won’t be taking them on the plane, just checking them like all the rest of your luggage, they’re treated just like any other piece that goes on.  I traveled, with my clubs and also those of both my kid in mid october and had zero problems. KT
