Question:
I have a fair amount of equipment (F5, second smaller body, 300mm/f4 lens, a large 17-35mm/2.8, filters, couple of other lenses, batteries, etc., etc.) that I need to take on an airplane with – carry-on, not checked. I have a bag now that’s packed so full, and is so heavy, that I’m afraid to take it that way (breakage of the gear and me are the concerns!). I need something a bit bigger and a bit easier to carry. Anyone ever use some kind of photo bag on wheels? Like the popular suit cases with the metal telescoping handles? I always suggest a non-photo bag. It is less of a target for thieves. — Dia ’s Muire duit Joseph E. Meehan

I use an American Tourister carry-on. Some come with small wheels. Also an over grown canvas satchel, looks like a messenger bag. I just line them with foam rubber. The one thing I never use is a camera bag. Bob Hickey

I use a solid aluminium suitcase to carry my stuff in the car. then i pick what I need and put it in a foamy lady’s bag . Each glass is protected by its own foam and nylon bag. When I go for macro , I use a military-like belt with lots of pockets around it. Of course, nothing of this resembles a photo bag : overpriced, bad conception ( unless you put 150 $ in a lowepro ) , excellent target for pickpockets ( especially the lowepros ! ).

I use a Lowepro Nature Trekker backpack. It comes with an over the shoulder strap and the backpack straps can tuck into pockets on the back when you’re not using them. As we speak, mine is holding an FDM2n body w/MD12 motor, a Photomic FTn body, Luna-Pro F with vari-angle attachment, a 28-80 zoom, a 70-210 zoom, 50mm, 200mm, and 85mm lenses, a Sunpack 544 and 411 flashes, lot’s of spare batteries, film, screw on filters, Cokin filters & holders… way too much shit! It fits under an airline seat or in the overhead. Bob Fowler

I have two sets of wheels that I use to tote a bag, if I have to carry a bag for a length of time. One set of wheels is a modified pull along Golf Bag cart, that has those large wheels so that the cart is easy to roll over rough dirt or rocky terrain. The other set of wheels is just a plain fold-up bag carrier with a telescoping handle, that attaches to a suitcase (in my case, a camera bag) when one is traveling by air. Other than those two items, I use no special bags or equipment.
