Question:
I would like to hear some opinions on this subject.Last summer I was at a qualifying tournament,as a spectator and I noticed that most of the players were using component clubs. These guys were trying to get their PGA cards. I asked one of them why and He the pros only use name brand clubs because they get them free. What do you think?

Component clubs are clubs whose parts are made by manufacturers. Obvious statement, it would seem. But a clubhead well made with characteristics that make sense in terms of the physics and geometry of impact that are available for $14.50 per iron head, less than $10 per iron shaft, and $2 for the best grip for the purpose make a lot more sense than poorly fitted, badly bent/adjusted major manufacturer brand name clubs that can’t do any more in real life –clubs that would need about $10 or more on average EACH just to bring them up to specifications of match, flex, lie, loft, etc. that I have with my $14.50 iron heads from Golfworks. Namebrand set for $600?, fix them to fit me $100. Vs. $350. Half the money. If there is any playability difference between these and the most expensive, finest possible clubs in the universe I will be hard pressed to see how! And if anything breaks in bending, a replacement is $10 for the broken "part". Oops, forgot to factor in the cost of the grip tape, glue, and ferrule. Please add $.35. That’s my take on it. Oh yes, my driver [Peerless] cost me $30 for the head and I had an old shaft that might have cost about $20 new that works just fine. It has the right flex for me. My 3 wood I got at Walmart for $39.95 and it is wonderful! My "5 wood" is a knockoff of the tight lies and it is great and solid for digging balls off the turf. I have no idea how any club can do any more for me than this rag-tag set. I got a leather golf bag that someone abandoned, too. Vs. $399 for a driver alone? Why? George

I play clubs I built myself from components, as do quite a few RSG types. They’re as good as anything you can get from one of the Big Name Brands. Most Tour Pros depend on a variety of sponsorships to keep em going until they can crack the Big Time…Some have been known to "SELL" those free clubs for GAS money…(g). ]]]Z[[[

I agree Ithink the difference in money would be better spent for lessons. Hank

You can find some great components from Golfsmith, Golfworks, Dynacraft, and others. Most clubheads out there (OEM’s and components) are cast at only a few places, one being Coast Casting. Most better forgings are done by the same couple of foundries. A reputable clubmaker can put together an excellent set of clubs for about 1/2 to 2/3 that of OEM showroom prices. That price includes custom fitting and other factors that you probably won’t get from off the rack clubs. I am playing with a set of forged clubs (Powell) that were custom built. If the extra money is to be spent on something, spend it there rather than on a OEM logo. Response:
I think that quality component clubs play as well as expensive name brands. We just like to think they don’t so that we justify the monstrous dollars spent on equipment. The truly important thing is to customize your equipment to your game, and component clubs assembled by a good clubmaker will do that just as well as any name brand club. Also, don’t feel like you’re left out of the technology. Component clubs have just as many technological tricks available as in magazine advertised name brands, both the useful improvements and the completely marketed fluff, but judging the true valor of technologies in golf clubs is a different discussion altogether. FWIW there are less than a dozen major club foundries (spel?) and few of them make one brand exclusively. Response:
Pros use name brand clubs because they get paid to play them – even then the name brand clubs are specifically tweaked for the individual pro. Quality components made into custom built clubs are hard to beat.

I dunno. Some name brand heads really are terrific. I wish I’d bought one of those 9 degree GBBs when they were being closed out. Maybe I’ll find a used one some day. -joseph
