lefty pull shots

Larry: I’m a lefty who used to either slice or pull – but I consider a pull to be a straight shot to the RIGHT, not left, I would consider that a push…am I right?  Anyhow I an now well on my way to a cure. The marks on your sole are either a severe outside-in swing or an open clubface.  Probably the open clubface if you are pushing to the left and slicing. My cure for this is a ‘cheat sheet’  I have written and keep attached to my golf bag, preserved under the cheap laminating sheets you get at Office Depot.  Yes, it’s corny, but it works for me.  Makes it convenient to read and refocuses me after a bad shot.   Once I started to get consistent with it, bingo!  Laser straight 9 of 10 shots.  Basically I distilled what my instructor, Pennick, Hogan, Leadbetter, Harmon, all the magazines etc. etc. were saying.  Mostly what they say is variations on a theme; different ways of saying/doing the same things.  Boil them down to what you can understand, not too many things, state them your way, and you will be better off. I accumulated these tips to address my flaws, my suggestion is to jot down any positive things you do at the range to improve your shots, and write something similar. I can’t emphasize that it’s MY trick – it may not work for you.  For me, it works on all clubs Also, I tend to have a song in my head to keep tempo smooth.  My instructor said he had "Slow down, you move too fast…."  the old Simon and Garfunkel tune.  I somehow prefer "Walk like an Egyptian".  Go figure. Notice I use top and bottom, front and back versus left and right!! :)  what’s in brackets [] is not on my sheet – but to clarify for you. ******* Survey:     approach from behind the ball Grip:     Back of top hand flat to target     Grasp in fingers     Hold loosely! Stance     Hogan stance [Back foot perp to target line, front foot turned out 1/8 turn]     Not too wide! Practice swing     1st, half-swing to remind of aim     Butt end towards target at hip-high on backswing     Clubhead towards target at hip-high on follow-through Swing (practice this once and then do for real!!)     Address         -elbows point down [inside crook of elbow faces up - helps keep arm straight and shoulders aligned]         -forward arm dead straight         -align shoulders and hips     Backswing         keep triangle together until club is hip high         Slow slow slow!!!  Smooth smooth smooth!!         ROTATE, ROTATE, ROTATE, WITH SHOULDERS!!  [Back of shoulders flat to target. If I don't rotate, I slice, every time]  [Forget about cocking your wrists. It happens naturally]         If butt of club slips in top hand at top of backswing, your backswing is TOO FAST. (NOT too loose a grip!!) [too fast a backswing can cause you to grip too tight, which screws everything else up, and could be causing your problem with open clubface]         Think Smooooooth!!     Downswing         Initiate with hips!  Not too much, though         Smoooooooth!!!  Sweep the ball         Pendulum!!! Swing FOR the follow through!! [this is important] Follow-through     Throw clubhead at target! [thinking about this during the entire swing helps prevent inside-out swing]     Finish high [Belly to target]     Weight in front! Good luck and let me know how it turns out for you! "Big Hands" Ron – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I am a lefty who has a problem in pulling all my shots low an to the left immediatley after contact. IMy grip an alignment are good an play the ball off the front heel for drives . I must be coming across the ball due to noticing my tee markings on the sole of my woods go diagnally across the head instead from front to back. Does anyone have any suggestions for a struggling lefty. thanks larry

I’ll jump in with the same suggestions I’d offer  a struggling righty, Larry. If you’re pulling everything, it sounds like you may be suffering from an outside-in swing. That is, the clubface is coming through the impact zone on an inward angle. If the face is open, you usually get a slice. If it’s closed, you get a hook. If it’s square to your outside-in swingline, you get a pull. I’d suggest focusing on making sure you start your downswing by rotating your hips back to the right and not start it with the arms or shoulders. Beginning back down with the arms and/or shoulders virtually always forces them outside, once the hips begin moving. The hips have to release first to keep that from happening. Make sure you’re keeping your arms close to your body on the downswing. With an iron, they should almost brush the right hip. If they’re in close to the hip, it’s a lot more likely your clubhead is traveling inside-out, the path you want.
