How can I rust my RTG?

Question:

Why? If it is anything like the Titleist Vokey Raw, all you have to is look at it.

Response:

Ok Robert, I understand what you want and it really shouldn’t matter to anyone why. But..here is what to do.  Go to a well equipted gun shop. Buy some gun browning (it’s a rust process that was used for gun finishes before blue become popular). As I recall, it can be bought in a complete kit form and was made by Birchwood Casey.  I will produce a nice plum brown color that should be very close to the color you described.  Hope this helps.

Response:

The stage properties manager for a theater group would only need about 15 minutes to have it looking like it had been recovered from the Titanic… :-)

Of course, what was wanted was something that looked like it was just manufactured! Rob

Why would I bother? I don’t give a damm what my RTG looks like. Rob

It actually depends a lot on the climate.  Here in the Phoenix area my RTG wedge tends to have relatively little serious rust on it.  Parts are a little shiny (the sole, the middle of the clubface, the leading edge, etc.) and the rest has a very thin brownish layer that looks more like old paint than rust.  When it goes to Hawaii, though, it quickly rusts all over. Then there was the day I played in Hawaii in the rain on a course that had just been fertilized.  WOW did that club turn some interesting colors the next day.   -joseph

– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – If you’re that picky, just paint it. Dave I dont want rust for spin. I want it for looks. I know it doesnt increase spin. But I want it to look a ceratin way. Thanks mpm …snip… Rusting (oxidation) is an interesting process. You expose the spontaneously oxidizable compound to oxygen, and it oxidizes ….hmmm….where is ther a lot of oxygen….in the air!…aha! So I just exposed my RTG to the air, and it rusted. To do this, I kept it in my golf bag and avoided reducing environments (which, if nothing else, would have killed me!). Rob

Response:

Rust it to much and you’ll just damage the face and grooves, anyway the rust doesn’t really enhance the spin.  those wedges it just makes the feel better by note having a hard metal coating

– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I have a Cleveland rtg. And I rusted it pretty good a while back but not sure how I got it to rust. The first time I rusted it with salt and water and it was a really dark kinda black rust. Then it rusted more and turned a nice dark maroon. I tried rusting it some more because it was coming off where I hit the ball and now its black colored again. How can I get that nice maroon colored rust? Any special way? Let me know. As right now its just sitting in a salt water solution and then Im lietting it sit outside for a while. Thanks Mpm

Soak a rag in cat pee, wrap the clubhead up in that, then place it on the passenger seat of your car in the sunlight with the windows rolled up. Should work fine.  Let me know how it turns out.   -joseph

Response:

It doesn’t help w/ the spin; the point of rust is that it’s dull, which means you don’t become blinded by the sun reflecting off the clubface when it’s at the right (or wrong) angle. Mike – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Rust does nothing for you.  It’s the lack of chrome plating that enhances spin, not the rust. I have a Cleveland rtg. I hate to be a smartass (well, not really), but why on earth do you care what color the rust is?  It’s not like the rust is doing anything for you.
