Question:

That looks like something my brother-in-law would have written.

Response:

Ron’s Retirement It is important for men to remember, that as women grow older it becomes harder for them to maintain the same quality of housekeeping as when they were younger. When you notice this, try not to yell at them. Some are oversensitive and there’s nothing worse than an oversensitive woman. My name is Ron… Let me relate how I handled the situation with my wife, Julie. When I took "early retirement" last year, it became necessary for Julie to get a full-time job, both for extra income and for the health benefits that we needed. Shortly after she started working I noticed she was beginning to show her age. I usually get home from the Golf Course about the same time she gets home from work. Although she knows how hungry I am, she almost always says she has to rest for half an hour or so before she starts dinner. I don’t yell at her. Instead, I tell her to take her time and just wake me when she gets dinner on the table. I generally have lunch in the Men’s Grill at the club so eating out is not reasonable. I’m ready for some home cooked grub when I hit that door… She used to do the dishes as soon as we finished eating. But now, it’s not unusual for them to sit on the table for several hours after dinner. I do what I can by diplomatically reminding her several times each evening that they won’t clean themselves. I know she appreciates this, as it does seem to motivate her to get them done before she goes to bed. I really think my experience as a teacher helps a lot. I consider telling people what they ought to do one of my strong points… And speaking of bed, her age really shows up there. I go out and golf all day, come in dead tired and after a two hour nap and a good meal, I’m ready, if you know what I mean. Age has gotten her so bad that she actually dozes off during lovemaking. But that’s okay. Her satisfaction in that area is important to a sensitive guy like me and if she enjoys sleeping during our little trysts, what the hey… Now that she has gotten older, she does seem to get tired so much more quickly. Our washer and dryer are in the basement. Sometimes she says she just can’t make another trip down those steps. I don’t make a big issue of this; as long as she finishes up the laundry the next evening, I’m willing to overlook it. Not only that, but unless I need something ironed to wear to the Monday lodge meeting, or to Wednesday’s or Saturday’s poker club, or to Tuesday’s or Thursday’s bowling, or something like that, I will tell her to wait until the next evening to do the ironing. This gives her a little more time to do some of those odds and ends like shampooing the dog, vacuuming or dusting… Also, if I had a really good day on the course and it was wet and muddy, my clubs are a mess, so I let her clean them, you know… get the grit off the grips and a little light Brillo on the club faces at a casual pace. My golf bag is heavy so I lift it out of the trunk for her. Women are delicate, have weak wrists and can’t lift heavy stuff as good as men. But I did tell her I don’t like to be wakened during my after-golf nap, so rather than bother me, she can put them back in the trunk when she’s finished. Another symptom of aging is complaining, I think. For example, she will say that it is difficult for her to find time to pay the monthly bills during her lunch hour. But boys, we take em for better or worse, so I just smile and offer encouragement. I tell her to stretch it out over two or even three days. That way she won’t have to rush so much. I also remind her that missing lunch completely now and then wouldn’t hurt her any (if you know what I mean). I like to think tact is one of my strong points. When doing simple jobs, she seems to think she needs more rest periods She had to take a break when she was only half finished mowing the yard. I try not to make a scene. I’m a fair man. I tell her to fix herself a nice, big, cold glass of freshly squeezed lemonade and just sit for a while. And, as long as she is making one for herself, she may as well make one for me too, then take her break by my hammock. That way she can talk with me until I fall asleep. I know that I probably look like a saint in the way I support Julie. I’m not saying that showing this much consideration is easy. Many men will find it difficult. Some will find it impossible! Nobody knows better than I do, how frustrating women get as they get older. However, guys, even if you just use a little more tact and less criticism of your aging wife because of this article, I will consider that writing it was well worthwhile. After all, we are put on this earth to help each other… Signed, Ron EDITOR’S NOTE: Ron died suddenly Thursday, June 3. He was found with a Calloway extra long 50 inch Big Bertha Driver II rammed up his posterior, with only 2 inches of grip showing. His wife Julie was arrested, but the Grand Jury accepted her defense that he accidentally sat on it and she was released on Friday, June 4. ^O^ o o o SPLAT !

Lori, I’m at a loss for words (still). I wanted to reply to your earlier post but couldn’t come up with anything meaningful. My prayers are with you and Curt. Larry

– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – We had the usual Zometa on Tuesday. Curt’s favorite IV nurse moved to a different site and he had this old lady from 1 time before. Again she had to poke him 3 times in 2 different spots and still had to wiggle that needle around. I had asked at the front desk about reading his chart. We had discussed that the evening before. Eventually, OL got the IV in and set it for 18 min. we just kept hoping the vein didn’t blow!. A Onoc. nurse came in and asked Curt how he was feeling "fatiqued, bone pain" where? "It is in a different place all the time. Last night, in my feet" have you had any recent bone scans? "no" (I had asked but Dr. pooh-poohed me) "can we read his chart now?" yes. I read the progress notes (which is what I was looking for. I wanted to see his dictations after our appts. There is where it is all laid out to read) I read the Bone scan results. total spine, ribs, long bones of the body, fingers and I just found out Base of the skull, right hemisphere!!! I didn’t know that. Now I have to research if that can spread to the brain easier by infecting the bone around the brain. That blood-brain barrier is so close. I ‘ll let you all know when we get those answers. — Lori Devoted wife of Curtis, Stage 4 Prostate cancer at age 40 PSA 865 Dec 30,2003 44 Feb 23,2004 17.3 Mar 15,2004 18.9 Apr 16, 2004 17.3 may 15,2004 14.59 =))) July 10, 2004 mets to bone and lymph Lupron Q3months Casodex 50 mg daily Zometa qmonth http://community.webshots.com/user/lorismiller From the 2nd visit on- out of 12- we definitely were in different rooms during those 8 min every 3 months. He charted how he spent one appt. talking remember hearing was "we’ll keep you alive as long as we can" He said in the 4th month that Curt finally was teary-eyed during the appointment so it must finally have sunk in. Curt has always said that he IS dealing with it, he’s not about to lay down and cry about it. He goes to work. The doctor’s office called Curt today to tell him that they want him to have some tests BEFORE the next appt with dr Londer Oct 5th. SO we are going in Sept 30 for some answers. CT, Bone scan. We will know if it is spreading, static, or receding. Also will have a psa.

Lorlei, I read your post with tears in my eyes, and a prayer in my heart. Why not throw him a surprise 4th when he gets backs? Why wait for next year. There is no telling what the progression will be. Peace, DanR

Response:

Lori, Advanced prostate cancer is not an area in which I have much knowledge. But from what you have said I believe Curt has to be very careful because he could break a bone which could cause a fall and the fall could cause more bones to break. I don’t think he can live his life in fear of breaking something because then he wouldn’t be doing much "living". But he and you need to be aware that it could happen while playing a round of golf or just walking from the kitchen to the den. I’d say just use common sense and he shouldn’t be carrying bags of groceries. I do wonder if he could get into one of the vaccine trials? Do they have him on anything to help rebuild lost bone?

He gets Zometa infusions every month to strengthen his bones. He did fall in the shower one morning but didn’t break anything. He has a helper who carries all his tools and I carry his golf bag when I am there. S13 helps with the groceries etc. Curt just told me this morning that he needs me to do all the things he can’t. I lost a wonderful friend to prostate cancer and I know his wife would probably be very willing to talk to you if you thought she could be of help. Of course she’s old enough to be your mom but she’s a super person. She probably knows more about this disease’s progression than anyone else I know.

Sorry to hear of your loss. It is amazing to me how many people tell me that their "FIL, SIL, Neighbor etc" has Prostate cancer. Fortunately, most of them are in the curable stages.. I don’t think any of us have any words to bring you comfort.

Just posting here gives me comfort. as long as I can vent here and seek support, I will be fine. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – So many times when you post I just wish I could wrap my arms around you and give you a shoulder to cry upon. Men don’t understand the support system women have over a cup of tea or coffee. Maybe we can’t change the world bu t somehow together we manage to cope. You have such strength within you but what mother doesn’t when she has little ones? Somehow I know you will manage for Curt, yourself, and your children. Being informed is the greatest asset and the best defense. For now keep living life as normally as possible. I’m sure that is part of the reason Curt is still working. Not that income isn’t important but it gives him a sense of purpose and provides a diversion from his situation.

I agree, his german father taught him the good work ethic he has. and the last month he hasn’t wanted to go to work and he says "you know that isn’t me" and "I feel 70 yrs old every time I get out of bed" Go throw yourselves one big anniversary party. Chances are you (and 90% of the couples in this world) aren’t going to make it to a 50th anniversary so pack a whole lot of quality into what you do have. Good food, good friends, and lots of fun is very important.

He will be elk hunting over this anniversary. I heard him on the phone with his buddy. He is taking out big 4wheeler with him. He told Larry (friend) that he knows he won’t be able to climb those mountains like he has in the past. I plan on throwing a big 5 yr party next year. thanks for listening. — Lori Devoted wife of Curtis, Stage 4 Prostate cancer at age 40 PSA 865 Dec 30,2003 44 Feb 23,2004 17.3 Mar 15,2004 18.9 Apr 16, 2004 17.3 may 15,2004 14.59 =))) July 10, 2004 Repeat CT and Bone scan coming Sept 30th!!!!! mets to bone and lymph Lupron Q3months Casodex 50 mg daily Zometa qmonth http://community.webshots.com/user/lorismiller

We had the usual Zometa on Tuesday.
Just a regular sized golf bag (not one of those huge club bags). Thanks.

Never tried a set of clubs, but I’m guessing two might fit. If you have the folding rear seats, you could probably get 4. All coupes come with folding seats – is yours a sedan? Floyd

Two will fit easy enough if the woods aren’t too long

Hmm, I’m getting the premium package and I’ve been told it comes with the ski bag option thingy… maybe the options between Canada and U.S. are different? I didn’t even see an option for the cold weather package – me thinks I need to call my dealer.

The options may have been changed since we rolled our ‘01 330i out of the showroom, but at *that* time: * Cold Weather did not include fold-down seat, but just a ski sack that worked with the already-included fold-down flap behind the armrest. You’ll get a ski through there but not a set of clubs. * Premium package did not include folding rear seat either. * It was a stand-alone, $450ish option that was very difficult to find on stock cars.
The instructors at the BMW Driving School in Spartansburg, SC / USA said that two regular bags will fit in an M3. If its a foursome, and you have four bags, get an M5.. hahahahaha! If I bought an M5, I couldn’t afford golf. HAND — "Freedom Is a Light for Which Many Have Died in Darkness" - Tomb of the unknown – American Revolution

Beef jerky? Some string cheeses would be okay without refrigeration for a morning or afternoon. I take dried jack cheeses on backpack trips for a week or more without refrig. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -Spring has sprung – looking for new ideas for snacks – must have protein – for golf bag (and car) (can’t need refrig) – particularly for morning (too early for too sweet, nuts) – tired of bars and tend to have chocolate and too sweet — ideas?? thanks —

When I tried out a Corvette 5 at guitar center I really loved it. I ended up special ordering a 6 string Corvette. A year later I’m a little wiser. The sound I loved about that bass was more a product of the brand new steel strings. I hated the dead string tone. I’d describe it as hollow. My hands take strings from Growly as a Son of B* to dead in a week. I sold it and ordered a Ken Smith. It should be here any time.

What’s really crazy about the story is that while I was setting it up, I found that the truss rod was stripped – somebody had bought it, screwed it up and then returned it :-( I took it back and exchanged it for a Thumb Bass… Among the lightest of basses I’ve played!

Thanks for all the great info, gives me something to think about. Living in central Florida I doubt I will be walking all the time, except for this time of year and I was actually told most places require you get the cart but I think I will go with the stand/carry bag and maybe get a bigger cart bag down the road. Thanks again! -Danny

Danny, I agree. That is definitely the best way to go. — JVDP

Avoid ’staff bags’. I got comped a high end set and opted for the top-of-the-line bag. The bag, empty, weighs 15 lbs. Caddy’s get paid to carry these things around, you DON’T want to do that. It doesn’t ride well on a cart, it falls off a hand cart, and it attracts people who would be inclined to walk off with it. I ended up going to Target and getting a $60 bag to replace my $350 high-end bag. I’m a LOT happier with the cheaper bag. All my friends have stand bags and those seem to work equally well if they are walking or riding. In bags, cheaper is better, as long as it holds everything you want to carry. All the clubs, balls, sweater, umbrella? Can you imagine actually wearing out a golf bag? Get the smallest and cheapest bag that meets your needs. /)_

– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I recently bought a used set of clubs to practice with as this is my first attempt at the sport. They aren’t anything special but it will do for now. I do need a bag, however and see that their are different types of bags to choose from. If most of my games will be aided with a golf cart, which bag should I choose (cart, stand, travel, etc). I would think cart but seems like they are referring to those small hand carts, not golf carts. Please advise, thanks! -Danny if u like to walk and dont mind carrying a bag, get a stand bag. otherwise just get a cart bag. about 9" size would be ideal.

I recently bought a used set of clubs to practice with as this is my first attempt at the sport.

The word "cart" is ambiguous in a world wide forum. To me I think of my SpeedCart that I use to push my bag around the course. I really, really prefer walking to riding. I carry more often than I push, and hardly ever ride. Things would be different if I lived in a hot and humid location. What I recommend is that you consider getting a couple of bags. One bag is real light that you can take down to the par-3 course for a couple of hours after work. Make sure it has two straps, one for each shoulder. If it has removable bags, remove them. This is a minimalist approach and you want to make it as easy as possible to carry. The big cart bag can be as big as you want. It carries everything you could possibly want, and keeps clubs separate. I saw one model that actually split into two – you could carry a couple of clubs away from your cart, in this while leaving the big heavy part strapped in behind the seat. Remember that you WILL have situations where you need to walk a while without knowing for sure what club you will need. You don’t want to carry a big bag when you are on cart-path only, and carrying 3 clubs, a towel, and some extra balls around can be a pain. It is easy to forget clubs that way as well.

Response:

Buying a golf bag is no different – anything you buy , you make a choice, you usually get what you pay for. When riding you should have a cart bag, roomy, efficient, handy. Here is one to choose, or build around. http://www.intheholegolf.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Produ… If most of my games will be aided with a golf cart, which bag should I choose cart, stand, travel, etc.

Is there such a thing as a motorized individual (one-rider) golf cart? (the two- wheeled scooter type). Would they be allowed on a course? It would sure beat walking, if there was one to carry a bag w/clubs. m h o v fe

"The Rev", Todd McGillivray, is very interested in doing an RSG outing in the Maritimes next summer. I’ll talk to him this weekend and let him know of your interest. He lives in Regina, Saskatchewan, but is a Maritime native (St. John or Freddy….can’t remember). Todd spoke very highly of his round with Bruce a few years ago. — Washington State University "That shot is impossible!…Jack Nicholson himself couldn’t make it!"– Homer Simpson

how cold, and blustery does it have to get before you consider – it isn’t worth it?

Snow. In fact, this past April, it started to snow on the course. It was the coldest round I’ve ever played. It was (obviously) at most 32 degrees, but the wind was blowing a good 20-30 mph, CONSTANTLY! However, it is a bit different this time of year. It’s too dark for me to play after work, so I only get 9 or 18 holes in a week, and the game starts to go to crap, so it’s not nearly as fun. I’m at my best when I’m playing in my 2 leagues, then play on Sat or Sun morning.

No snow down here in Moncton, NB yet but the temperatures are getting close to my limit. I played twice this weekend but the courses around here are starting to close. My limit is around 5*C as long as its not wet and not too windy.

Response:

Hi Rod, We got nailed with almost 15 cm (~6") of snow in Hartland last week. My golf buddies decided that we’d drive south until we found an open course. Fortunately, the snow line was around the Nakawic area and most of the courses were still open in Fredericton. I have to admit it was pretty strange to be packing the clubs in the car, making sure not to slip on the ice and having to use a lock de-icer to get in the car before a round of golf! I’m too much of a golf addict to stop before the courses are closed. I’ve been snowed on about a half dozen times and have even played when I could putt accross water hazards. The season is too short as it is so I make sure I keep a wool cap in my golf bag. Still counting on a couple more outings before Jack Frost takes over. Maybe we could have an RSG New Brunswick next season, during more favourable weather conditions. What do you think Bruce? The halfway point between Moncton and Hartland would be right around your hometown of Fredericton. Peter Brennan

  – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I live in New Brunswick, Canada and play until the courses close due to snow. No snow down here in Moncton, NB yet but the temperatures are getting close to my limit. I played twice this weekend but the courses around here are starting to close. My limit is around 5*C as long as its not wet and not too windy.

how cold, and blustery does it have to get before you consider – it isn’t worth it? there might be geographical areas whereby – if you don’t play under inclement weather conditions, the golfing season is – short. m h o

I am looking for a small car that has a boot big enough to take a set of clubs across the boot, not diagonally. Anyone got any recommendations. Our number one show stopper when car shopping is not being able to get 2 sets of clubs in easily.

If you’re thinking about getting a push cart, check out its size before doing your car shopping. (Another good question to figure out in advance if you travel is what cars will take your golf travel bag. Getting a hard sided case into a rental car is often a neat trick.)

Good point. It would be fun to take my clubs with me while car shopping. Don’t take a test drive without them!

There is a product out there designed with this in mind – I pulled the URL to the Golfsmith site but you can find this in many shops. http://www.golfsmith.com/ps/ppage.php?stynum=231278&lcode=031002PSPRO… You can spot it by the narrower opening, but you can get 14 clubs in there safely – I’ve been told positive things about it but have never used it myself. The Dallas Morning News did a story about the guy who designed it – he started out with some PVC pipe and fabric, and later had pockets sewn to get a rough approximation of what you see there. But he did it because he wanted something to allow him to fly to visit clients and play golf with them, take his clubs safely, and NOT be the size of those giant SKB cases that you can buy. So anyway, this might be a solution for a lot of traveling golfers – AND it will fit fine on a cart. -b

My old Celebrity could take 2 sets of clubs on wheels, but neither my Olds Delta nor my Buick LeSabre will take much more than one bag.

Not in the new VW Jetta. I have a ‘97 and my clubs fit nicely across the back. We were looking at the 2003 Jettas (I believe redesigned in 1999) and no dice.

I drive a ‘99 New Jetta and there’s no way it goes in straight across with the woods in the bag. I even take out my driver when putting it in diagonally. For the vehicles shipping to North America, the compartments are left there, but just empty (ie no kit). This is the same with the Jetta wagon.

It may be designed in and parts manufactured in Deutschland, but Jettas for the U.S. market are assembled in Mexico (at least mine is). Dave Clary/Corpus Christi, Tx Home: http://home.stx.rr.com/dclary RSG Roll Call http://www.rec-sport-golf.com/members/?rollcall=claryd

The trunk is like a glove compartment, but in the rear. Fits my golf bag, plus a smaller Sunday bag, the usual assorted clubs, shoes and spare balls. The current version of the MR2 has no trunk at all, none <doh! As far as the Mini, I’d been browsing their newsgroup and read that it wasn’t a good fit for a bag of clubs. What trunk it has is too narrow so you’d have to stand the bag diagonally, else open the interior lid of the trunk and stand the bag upright so the head of your drivers stuck up. But I may be wrong, let us hear back after the test drive. FWIW, the Madza Rx8 carries two golf bags. . .

In UK we have a bigger problem with smaller roads, smaller cars and golf bags the same size. Both my wife and I play a lot of golf so we need a car that will take 2 bags and 2 trolleys. Not too many will do that, certainly a 5-series BMW won’t, so we stay with our unglamorous but big carrying capacity Ford Mondeo. 2 Bags, 2 trolleys, 2 shoe bags and a weekend suitcase, but approaching retirement I want something a little less utilitarian.
Well, my Smart can hold six cases of beer in the very oddly shaped trunk, but the golf bag has to go on the passenger seat. Trolley is out.
Our number one show stopper when car shopping is not being able to get 2 sets of clubs in easily. I had a ‘92 Honda Accord. I used to routinely put three carry bags in the trunk, along with all the other crap that three guys will take for a day of golf.

My 91 accord would do that. It’s a tight fit in my ‘95 accord. My 2003 accord will easily take them, but it’s no longer really a small car. My observation is whether or not they will fit has much more to do with the geometry of the wheel wells and other miscelaneous stuff in the car than the exterior size of the car. We were looking at the 2003 Jettas (I believe redesigned in 1999) and no dice. What has happened is that the space behind the wheel wells (ie between the wheels and bumper) have been filled in with these little storage comparments that are covered with a flap. I asked the dealer why this was changed and he said in Germany, first-aid kits in cars are required by law now and this is were they would go if the car was being sold in Germany. For the vehicles shipping to North America, the compartments are left there, but just empty (ie no kit). This is the same with the Jetta wagon. I can only assume that this is now the case for the Golf as well. Ironic; a call called the "Golf" has been redesigned making its storage capacity for golf clubs smaller and more inconvenient. I guess B. Langer doesn’t drive a VW.

Off topic a bit, but: you can lay a bag of clubs on the back of either a Triumph Tiger or a BMW K75 with a luggage rack, vertically in-line with the vehicle. Be sure to have a secure cover for the bag, and be smart with regards to your center of gravity and use of bungee.
