Best golf bag for a gift – suggestions ?

Question:

What do you all prefer for a good, all-around golf bag?  Maybe the better question is:  If someone were going to buy you a golf bag, what kind of bag would you like to have?   I’m looking to buy a bag for someone whose current bag is at least 15 years old and abused beyond repair (we’re talking duct-tape patches here) and since I’m not a golfer, I’m not sure what is considered a good, practical bag.  The current bag is a canvas and leather-type bag, but that isn’t a criteria.  Leather, canvas, or whatever would be fine.   Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated! One of the things you will be asked most from this post is if they person getting the bag usually rides a cart or uses a pull cart or walks.  If a cart of some kind, probably any kind of larger staff bag would be greatly appreciated.  If the person is a walker, I strongly suggest the Izzo (www.izzo.com) Delight.  It is a great bag and can be found (I forget where) on the internet for around or under $130, if I remember right. But, the most important part if they are a walker, as far as I am concerned, it must have a stand and 2 straps.  A lot of bags come with those standard, but be sure to check.  The Delight has both of those. You will get all kinds of suggestions, I would just try to look at them all on the internet and see which one you think they would prefer.

Response:

Bridget, Depends on whether the person rides in a cart, uses a pull cart (trolley), or walks and carries the bag.  A large "staff" bag would be good for the cart rider.  These are in the 10 in + size (diameter of the top).  Plenty of room, etc.  Most bags these days are either some type of codura nylon or vinyl or a combination.  Be prepared for at least $150+, the + depends on your relation to the said person <grin.  The same bag would work for the pull cart, but a smaller 8 – 10 in bage might be better.  Don’t even think about these bags for a bag carrier.  Look for a lightweight, nylon bag with double straps and a stand.  I fall in this category.  Three good companies or models are Izzo, Ping Hoofer, and Jones Sport.  The later makes bags for a large number of high school and college teams, but they are sold to the general public.  You can go to a golf course pro shop or one of the discount golf stores such as Edwin Watts or Nevada Bob’s.  They will have a large number of bags available, although they usually do not stock as many of the walk and carry bags as the larger more expensive ones.  You may have to order one of them so hurry. Take a look (http://www.golfseat.com) at the "Ultimate" combination golf bag and pull cart with an integrated seat if you prefer to walk or  the "Combo" pull cart  with integrated seat and removable golf bag if you walk sometimes and ride sometimes.
