6/4/2000 — the day I gave up golf

Question:

– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Oh sure, we came in last place in the tournament (a 10 and a 12 hcap can’t win a fourball when they match scores on 13 holes) <clip Our annual Member/Guest tournament was last weekend…pretty hefty entrance fee and a similar amount for our team in the calcutta.  First day we were ok…in the hunt.  Second (last) day, we were going great guns until 11, a par 5, where I ducked a drive into waist high weeds. Found it and atop some fire ants.   Great, I get a drop where I can hit a 5 iron off the hillside to the fairway.  Then another 5 iron (about 175) to the green!  I had just mentioned to my partner that I hadn’t three putted in the last 6 rounds.  Four…count ‘em….FOUR putts. It screwed him up so badly that on a following hole he T.C. Chen’ed an easy chip.  These two holes took us out of the money. My wrists are now crossed, trying to stop the bleeding from the suicide attempt.  If that works I’ll play next weekend. "Someone likes every shot" bk

It makes me wish that I had never been able to play to a single-digit handicap. "Find your game"  – Taylor Made "Send bloodhounds" — me. —     –dph.         (preferred email: dhayes AT iname DOT com) Before you buy.

The good news is, you still haven’t three putted in the last 7 rounds!! :-) Bob

High Dave. You’re suppose to tell us how long since your last round. Before you buy.

While searching through my golf bag for cyanide capsules yesterday, it dawned on me that I don’t have to put myself through this time consuming, expensive torture every weekend. I couldn’t find the capsules but I resolved that once I got home I would take every golf-related item and put it in my basement storage area.  Over the next few holes, I made a mental list of all the items: Golf magazines, Dr. Rotella’s books, clubs, shoes, umbrella, shag-bag, bucket-o-balls lamp, Momentus, Whippy TempoMaster, etc. etc. I hit the green on 13 and two-putted for par, hit a reasonable drive on 14 but my approach shot hit off the top of the bunker and bounced over the green — bogey.  Made a ho-hum bogey on the next hole, hit a 6-iron on 16 that must have been a near-ace but the 9.5′ putt stayed out of the cup.  Hit a sand-wedge to 6′ on 17 and made the birdie. F#CK, F#CK, F#CK — two good holes in a row and I start thinking about playing again.  The stow-it-all-in-the-basement list is forgotten and I start planning for a trip to the driving range. Oh sure, we came in last place in the tournament (a 10 and a 12 hcap can’t win a fourball when they match scores on 13 holes) but I won a few dollars ($28) playing on Saturday.
