Yes Mary, it’s a gorgeous sunny day here today and yesterday too. The temps are going to stay up for a few more days too. I’m just loving it! I hope it sticks around for awhile too. I know, we never seem to get a nice Spring anymore. As you said, it jumps from cold to hot. I love Spring. I hope it stays this way for a long time. :-) Enjoy your day. Hugs, Di – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Hi Diane, I guess you will be sunbathing in your back yard today with this warm weather of last few days and for next few days . Weekend is to be in mid 70’s and sunny – outdoor cafes are busy, golfers are back in the swing and down by the lake at the Beaches, lots of people walking around. Today on my balcony which faces south, it was 84F around noon and could be a couple of degrees warmer where you are. The temp has gone down to 76F on my balcony now that its around 2 pm, and the sun is not shining on the thermometer. Evening and overnight temps are cool, not like hot humid nights in summer when it often doesn’t go below 80F. We don’t seem to get any spring any more. It seems to go from cold to hot overnight. I have been cleaning up my window air conditioner in my living room getting ready for summer. I love air conditioning. When it gets to the 80’s and up, my body doesn’t adapt very well and sometimes I feel faint when I go outside. But for now, the weather in 70’s is fine – if only it would stay that way. Mary — The charter is available at: http://readystump.algebra.com/~asapm

We’ve had rain for the past few days off and on. – April showers. No snow, but some areas north of here got snow and yesterday Kalamazoo,Michigan got quite a lot of snow according to videos on TV weather last night. So did Montana and Oregon and upper New York. Its to be 57F in a few days so they say. For April it has certainly been lower than average temps. It seems to be the same in many northern states.
We had some rain too mixed with some hail on Wed. Today is sunny. Our temps are supposed to go up on Mon. to 11C and then 14C on Tues. I can’t wait. CT is very nice to live in. Yes, we could get a lot of snow. One year in the 80’s we had a blizzard the second week in April and then a year or two after that, we got another blizzard in the third week of April. It is 36F today and cold and below normal temps for this time of year. should be around 52F. (It was 52F in January -LOL). I went for a short walk today and headed towards the store, when suddenly heavy snowflurries started and was like that for 10 mins. or so. I was in the store for approx. 20 mins. and when I came out it was nice and sunny and no sign of snow flurries. There is no snow on roads or sidewalks here. Places like New York state had snow and lower temps than here in the last few days. You must get the same weather as Detroit as you are only across the bridge or tunnel. On a map, you can see that most of Michigan is north of Toronto and many other places in Ontario and Windsor is level with the extreme lower end of Michigan. We get these unpredictable weathers because of being between two weather patterns and because of being near the Great Lakes.
I spoke too soon yesterday and we had a chilly wind. I was able to wear my spring jacket too with a sweater and no gloves or hat. They are predicting 0C on Friday with snow. We’ll see. I hope not. Take care.
Hi Diane. I thought about you yesterday when watching weather on local TV and said Windsor was 82F yesterday – Pretty good consider we are still in last days of March. It was around 68F here yesterday so not as hot as Windsor, as I told you Windsor is always a few degrees warmer than here but not usually 12 degrees more. I had to go by bus somewhere yesterday and had a semi winter jacket on and I was waiting in the sun and I was sweating. Several high school students who were waiting for the bus had short shorts on and on the local news was live pics of outdoor cafe patios with summer umbrellas and people having a drink or coffee. On Sunday I talked to a cousin on the phone who lives in Windsor. He said it was 70F a couple of days before and he’s been playing some golf. Its been around 55-62F here till yesterday so that enough for the golfers to get on golf courses. So its been pretty good, considering winter didn’t begin till mid Jan. this year. It can still snow, but won’t last. Its around 52F today and sunny. I like it. Mary — The charter is available at: http://readystump.algebra.com/~asapm

Question:

  – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I don`t know whether you are able to work or not. Only you can answer that. I talked to God about this last night. (It was my one moment of emotional peace and quiet.) I just can’t work. Just because I do absolutely zero all day long doesn’t mean I’m lazy or anything. I’m in a lot of pain, and every day is a real struggle. I really hate living. Well, not living, but living on Earth, in this day and age. I keep thinking if I find a great woman, that’ll make things better, but seeing as I’m one step above bed-ridden, I have nothing to offer these potential Aphrodites, other than love, which isn’t enough. I don’t want to lower my standards, which are high, but then I sort of have to, because there aren’t any takers. So salvation through love is out. There’s my writing, but I don’t know what to write about. I’ve been in writer’s block since my teens. I want to write a great novel, and don’t have the skills. I should write every day to improve them, but I absolutely detest my own work. There’s always something wrong with it. It’s like I want to write without having a voice, but that’s impossible. OTOH, there is a voice in me, that I can’t find, and thus can’t express myself, because I’m worried that all I really have to say is a big, 64 pt swear word, with lots of exclamation points. Then there’s money. I have none of that, and as long as I can get some food in me every day, that’s fine … but all I do is spend my money on food. About all of it, actually, minus bills. Food is so damned expensive, and I’m *way* below the poverty line here on disability. What if I could afford a car? What if I could afford a house? What if I could afford to travel? You know. Stuff like that. Plus, I would be able to bring something to the Aphroditic table, as it were, and some wonderful soul of a woman would take me home with her, or rather let me take her to my own palatial, um, palace, because that’s what everyone wants. Or sort of. What does all this mean? There is no hope. My only hope is to get a grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, to sit and do nothing. Or else get put on medical marijuana for life, and sit here, do nothing, and just laugh about it. But neither of those things are going to happen, despite Bill having gotten $37bn for his foundation from William Buffet today, considered the largest single donation in American history. That was the high point of my day, actually, to see such a wonderful thing in the news. Not because I’d get even a cent of that money, but because it meant that somewhere on this planet there was righteousness, mercy, love. If the world felt better, I would feel better. But this world is full of violence and hatred, prejudice, poverty, and overall terrible suffering … which seems to send its painful vibes my way. Oy vey, what can be done? Nothing, I guess. Sorry to have rambled. You can tell I’m lonely for talk, and could rattle on like this for two more screens. Hope you’re well, and thanks for listening. Ian

- Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Some of you may know my old friend John. Well, actually, that’s not true. None of you do. We had an eventful last night as friends. He hit on me in a very forceful manner, which I won’t describe, and I told him I was going on disability (this was in ‘94). He got very angry, and told me I’d get fat and sit around all the time. Well, I never heard from him after that. My not wanting to sleep with a guy pretty much sealed that door. But he was right about the disability. I’m weak, folks. I’m weak. Not mentally. I’m very strong mentally. I’m very strong in my beliefs and convictions, and my knowledge. Sitting in front of the computer 24/7 for years has taught me more than 6 yrs of the nightmare that was college ever could. But I’m physically weak, and I’m emotionally weak, and that means I can’t get a job. It may not be fair. I was working right up to the point I got on disability. True, I called in sick a lot, and hated every second of it, but most minimum wage workers feel the same way about *their* jobs. But I found out that being psychotic, I could get on disability, and sure enough it was as easy as filling out the forms. Being in a few psych wards kind of greases the skids there. John was right. Disability weakened me. It gave me the time off to mature as a person, which has pretty much saved my life. In 1995 I had my stomach pumped three times because of pill overdoses, I was in jail, in two psych wards, in a group home, and all immediately after leaving college with *one class to go* because I had spent my rent money on drugs. If I hadn’t had the time to reassess my situation, I would be dead today. None of you would be reading this (and, as far as I know, none of you are). What am I saying? The mind wanders. I guess it’s 2.30 am, no one’s up to talk to, I’m dying to unload, and so once again I write what someone on here called horseshit, but hey, those horses have to shit sometimes. I don’t know what to do. I can’t get out of this chair, because the pain I feel is non-stop. I’m constantly exhausted. Right now I feel like I can’t even write this, yet I can’t sleep, I can’t make coffee, I can’t write, I can’t listen to music.
Find something that you can dedicate some of that free time to. There are a lot of Open Source projects that could use help with writing documentation, art work, web design, even programming. Wikipedia needs tons of volunteer proof readers and researchers. There is project Gutenburg that could use help with getting books out for public consumption. If you have a decent speaking voice you can volunteer your time to read a book or even just a chapter of books to make audio books for Project Gutenberg or LibriVox.
What kind of jobs do you think of when daydreaming about joining the workforce?

I want to work with sewage. It’s a dream. No, actually, I have no daydreams about getting out into the workforce. I can barely handle cleaning the cat’s litter box, and so I doubt that I’d be able to handle anything other than miniature golf course guy, which I did for a few weeks one summer. It was a very unpopular course. I just sat there and read Jane Austen, and sometimes people would come up, and I would give them their clubs and golf balls. Oh, and a scorecard. Then I would put their money in the till and go back to reading. I was supposed to clean the course, but I never did. That was against the whole purpose of the job: to sit and do nothing. IOW, I look for a job where I can do nothing. The problem is, of course, that when you get hired for a job, typically it’s because someone *needs something done*. What are you gonna do? Maybe I should enter politics. My platform will be simple. About six inches off the ground, plain white tarp, and a chair for me to sit in. I will promise vast wealth to all my constituents, and free health care at the Mayo Clinic, without waiting in line. I will then promise an end to world violence, and the beginning of a galactic empire, and just watch the votes roll in. Then, when I get to Washington, I’ll just forget all those pledges and just vote along party lines. Seems like a decent job. Ian — I’m sick of following my dreams.
Hi Jim. I have my books site, and I do need to get back to it. I was helping out at Distributed Proofreaders for a while, but that got to be pretty stressful. Pretty much everything stresses me out. I have to update my books site RSS feed every day, and that’s stressful, even though it takes about two minutes. I hate knowing I *have* to do it.

Try not to let those things stress you out. Remember you are doing them for you and for your enjoyment. Do them if you want, or don’t. No pressure Whatever I do, I have to get out of this chair for a while every day, because it’s dragging me down. Thanks for the advice, though. I wish I could do more. My friend Bob is egging me on to learn C#, so I’m doing that, albeit slowly. Still stuck in loops, literally. Mostly do…while loops.

There are several looping constructs for a reason.  If you don’t like  one, use one of the others.  I mostly use for loops and while loops.  The do…while will just execute the body of the loop at least once  before the while condition is checked.  // this will execute the body of the loop  i = 5;  do  {     j = i * 2;     i++;  } while ( i < 2);

or // this will not execute the body of the loop i = 5; while (i < 2) { j = i * 2; i++; } Then it’s a boring chapter on operators, most of which I already know. Then it’s the really hard stuff: objects, methods, and classes, which somewhat mystify me. I know how they *work*, but not how I would implement them in a program. I mean, I can construct my own type, but why would I?

Once you create more advanced programs, you will see the need for  creating your own objects.  For example, say you want to represent a  customer.  You can create a customer object that knows how to handle all  the specifics of a customer.  This is a simplified class/object.  Once  you learn more advanced object constructs, you would used properties,  constructors, etc.  class Customer  {     protected string custName = "";     protected string custAddr = "";     public void InitializeCustomerData(int custID)     {       // do code here to initiaize customer data like       // connect to a database, etc.     }  }

Now your program can just work with this Customer object any time it needs to work with a "customer". An object is really just a tidy way to package up common functionality and traits of a "thing" to make it easier to work with that "thing". I’m so depressed. I sit and listen to Air America radio for hours, and then get even more depressed, because there’s nothing I can do to help this world, other than my books site, which helps this planet’s inhabitants about as much as burping on the sidewalk. Probably less. By burping on the sidewalk, I’m helping to add nutrients to the atmosphere. <sigh

Don’t think you have to "help" the world to have purpose. All humans take more from the world then they ever give back. It is just part of survival. Think of how much food, wood, energy, etc the average person uses during their lifetime. It adds up to a lot of resources that all of us use and none of us ever give back an equal amount. The best you can do is to just do the best with the hand you have been dealt. Think of how many people on this list you have helped by just writing something funny or witty. Making someone smile, laugh or just think is a Good Thing(tm) in my book. ;-) Jim — _|/_ (o o) | You roll an 18 in Dex and see if you | | don’t end up with a girlfriend | | JimD – Central FL, USA, Earth, Sol | — The charter is available at: http://readystump.algebra.com/~asapm

I don`t know whether you are able to work or not.

Yeah, I know, and I’m going back to sleep, and probably won’t feed her her Fancy Feast until I wake up, which drives her nuts. She’s addicted to that stuff. Lots of fat and protein, designed, it would seem, for the sole purpose of driving cats insane with desire for it. It’s after 4 — maybe I’ll try to get some sleep. I hope you’re doing the same.

Yeah, I just konked out very suddenly. I’m so glad I don’t suffer from insomnia. I can’t sleep on a schedule, but when I’m finally sleepy, I just lay down and bam, I’m asleep. Hope you’re doin’ well, Ian — I’m sick of following my dreams. I’m just gonna ask where they’re goin’, and hook up with ‘em later.
Some of you may know my old friend John. Well, actually, that’s not true. None of you do. We had an eventful last night as friends. He hit on me in a very forceful manner, which I won’t describe, and I told him I was going on disability (this was in ‘94). He got very angry, and told me I’d get fat and sit around all the time.

<snip Hi Ian, I know exactly what it’s like to sit around and get fat. I’ve been trying various part time jobs lately. Hopefully I can find something that I’m both physically and mentally able to do. Hauling cement block and mud has proved to be too much in the heat. I was hoping the hard work would help me loose weight, but the summer sun is simply too much for me. I just picked up an application at a smaller grocery store. I’m not sure what I’d like to do though. Every job there that I can think of gives me anxiety just thinking about it. What kind of jobs do you think of when daydreaming about joining the workforce? Maybe I should just go for cart pusher? (buggies to those in the old land, and those down south like me.)
Ian, I haven’t read any answers you have gotten. This is coming from my heart.
I dont think the term "you need a good kick up the ass " is sutable advice for any one to give to anyone else, but when you are alone in your own hell you have to decide how much is your doing .Life can be far better than it is now if you try real hard, and it is really worth it ,you can get there but it will cost you your current comfort zone if you can call it that ,so why dont you tell your self what you need yourself .We can all help you on this journey, but you have to put in the hard work yourself .I pass on all the strength I can use it wisely — The charter is available at: http://readystump.algebra.com/~asapm

you can get there but it will cost you your current comfort zone

You know, one of the wisest things a psychologist ever told me was, "Try to stay as uncomfortable as possible." This really works, but it’s hard to keep up. The comfort zone is a defense mechanism, and these things, while always well-intentioned, rarely help out in the long run. My defense mechanism is to flee from reality, and if I hurt, I don’t move. It’s important to remember that it won’t hurt that much more if I *do* move, and moving tends to lead to accomplishment, while not moving tends to lead to failure. I’m totally with you on this, and I hope I never receive the metaphorical kick in the ass, because that might involve eviction or loss of benefits, and that would lead me to an edgy situation, wherein I teetered between suicide and accomplishment. I’m trying to find the easier, softer way, as they say in AA, and so far no luck. I will try to stay uncomfortable. Hope you’re well, Ian — I’m sick of following my dreams. I’m just gonna ask where they’re goin’, and hook up with ‘em later.
By now we’re all familiar with President Bush’s demand for legislation banning "human-animal hybrids" — namely, the gathering threat of a race of Pig Men. These half-pig, half-man monstrosities received higher billing in the State of the Union than did the rebuilding of New Orleans — so it must be important. For measure, let’s see Secretary Chertoff’s rendering of Pig Man again: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/theblog/archive/pigman.jpg Tuesday night, I declared my support for the president on this front and have set about my patriotic duty researching and tracking this threat. What I discovered might shock you. Nestled in the Bitterroot Valley, Montana is a secret operation to build the race of Pig Men — a facility brazenly named Pigman Builders. http://www.pigmanbuilders.com/ How long have they been growing Pig Men in Matrix-style goo pods? Long enough to have achieved the self-proclaimed status of "Innovative and Award Winning." So there’s awards for this grotesque bastardization of God’s science? Worse — they give out awards for hating America? Upon further investigation, I discovered that the lab is partially operated by — you guessed it — actual Pig Men. Their staff page lists the names Chip Pigman, Ron Pigman, Ran Pigman (could be a devilish clone of Ron), Anne Pigman, and Corky Pigman. So they’re giving names to Pig Men, eh? And endearing, all American names like "Corky" and "Chip"? As if they’re like us. I wonder which liberal activist judge allowed those birth certificates to be approved. http://www.pigmanbuilders.com/about/team.php Maybe it was Superior Court Judge Robert S. Pigman. http://www.vanderburghgov.org/home/index.asp?page=15&pageno=3&recordi… Hailing from the great state of Indiana, Judge Pigman is a clear indicator of the urgency of the threat of the Pig Man. They’ve infiltrated our judicial system — probably turning a blind eye at Pig Man crime and undermining our Constitution. And what’s more frightening to President Bush than Judge Pigman? Try combining three of his least favorite things: Pig Man, Lawyers, and New Orleans. That’s right. The law offices of Stone, PIG MAN, Walther, and Whittman are located in the America-hating city of New Orleans and what nefarious law practice do they specialize in? Toxic tort law. http://www.stonepigman.com/index.php We all know how much the president loves the environment, so he’d be especially angry if he knew these Pig Man lawyers actively defend alleged polluters against environmental claims. Last but not least is an aspect of this plot which spits and oinks in the very face of God, and nestles like a disgusting wad in his otherwise pristine white beard. Pig Man Marriage. I know. It’s gross and it’s against the Bible. The book of Leviticus 11:7 says: "The pig, because he has a split hoof, and is cloven-footed, but doesn’t chew the cud, he is unclean to you." But according to the Colorado Springs Gazette, Barbara Lynn Wright married cud-hater Jeffrey Dennis Pigman on August 4, 2001. http://www.findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_qn4191/is_20020105/ai_n1000… Odd that they were married two days prior to President Bush receiving the PBD "Bin Laden Determined to Strike Within the U.S." Coincidence or evidence of a Pig Man alliance with the terrorists? If Bush had been allowed to use his warrantless spy program on the Pig Men, perhaps we’d know for sure. If Mr. and Mrs. Pigman are reading my words right now, I must ask: why are you destroying the sanctity of marriage? I turned to my wife after learning this information and asked, "If Pig Man can marry, our holy marriage is useless and artificial, no? Let’s divorce, like our heroes Rush Limbaugh and Newt Gingrich!" And so, my marriage is over. Pig Man, you bastard! Stay vigilant, America. And support the president’s call for legislation against the Pig Man. I’m proud to join with the president in leading the charge. Are you with us, or against us?

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/6534243/ In Minnesota, pigs are being born with human blood in their veins. In Nevada, there are sheep whose livers and hearts are largely human. In California, mice peer from their cages with human brain cells firing inside their skulls. You could aquire a pig heart valve. Chimeras (ki-MER-ahs) – meaning mixtures of two or more individuals in a single body – are not inherently unnatural. Most twins carry at least a few cells from the sibling with whom they shared a womb, and most mothers carry in their blood at least a few cells from each child they have born. Recipients of organ transplants are also chimeras, as are the many people whose defective heart valves have been replaced with those from pigs or cows. And scientists for years have added human genes to bacteria and even to farm animals – feats of genetic engineering that allow those critters to make human proteins such as insulin for use as medicines. Imagine, said Robert Streiffer, a professor of philosophy and bioethics at the University of Wisconsin, a human-chimpanzee chimera endowed with speech and an enhanced potential to learn – what some have called a "humanzee." "There’s a knee-jerk reaction that enhancing the moral status of an animal is bad," Streiffer said. "But if you did it, and you gave it the protections it deserves, how could the animal complain?" Unfortunately, said Harvard political philosopher Michael J. Sandel, speaking last fall at a meeting of the President’s Council on Bioethics, such protections are unlikely. "Chances are we would make them perform menial jobs or dangerous jobs," Sandel said. "That would be an objection." The potential power of chimeras as research tools became clear about a decade ago in a series of dramatic experiments by Evan Balaban, now at McGill University in Montreal. Balaban took small sections of brain from developing quails and transplanted them into the developing brains of chickens. The resulting chickens exhibited vocal trills and head bobs unique to quails, proving that the transplanted parts of the brain contained the neural circuitry for quail calls. It also offered astonishing proof that complex behaviors could be transferred across species. More recently his team injected human neural stem cells into mouse fetuses, creating mice whose brains are about 1 percent human. By dissecting the mice at various stages, the researchers were able to see how the added brain cells moved about as they multiplied and made connections with mouse cells. Already, he said, they have learned things they "never would have learned had there been a bioethical ban." Now he wants to add human brain stem cells that have the defects that cause Parkinson’s disease, Lou Gehrig’s disease and other brain ailments – and study how those cells make connections. Scientists suspect that these diseases, though they manifest themselves in adulthood, begin when something goes wrong early in development. If those errors can be found, researchers would have a much better chance of designing useful drugs, Weissman said. And those drugs could be tested in the chimeras in ways not possible in patients. Now Weissman says he is thinking about making chimeric mice whose brains are 100 percent human. He proposes keeping tabs on the mice as they develop. If the brains look as if they are taking on a distinctly human architecture – a development that could hint at a glimmer of humanness – they could be killed, he said. If they look as if they are organizing themselves in a mouse brain architecture, they could be used for research. Maybe Dr. Weissman can impove yours!???

Here is information about the Sloan-Kettering online calculator. It is possible that it applies to other PSA doubling-time calculators.: Who Can Use This Tool? \ For Those Who Have Not Been Treated The tool is designed to be used by patients who have had a biopsy of the prostate confirming the presence of cancer. The biopsy must have had a Gleason grade assigned to it. The patient must also have had a PSA blood test performed, either prior to or not within 10 days following the biopsy, and not after the start of hormonal therapy if hormones have been started. The patient must also have been assigned a clinical stage using either the 1992 or 1997 clinical staging systems. The tool can also be used by patients who are considering hormone refractory therapy. The tool cannot be used for patients whose prostate cancer is believed to have spread to other parts of the body, such as bones or lymph nodes. \ For Patients Who Have Been or Are Receiving Treatment The tool can be used by patients who have received prostatectomy to treat the prostate cancer within the past 6 months. This tool is not for patients who have received hormonal therapy or radiation therapy either prior to or following surgery. This tool is also not for the patient who had surgery longer than 6 months ago.

On Christmas Eve, Warren inquired: Is there some kind of formula that is used to determine one’s PSA doubling time? Well, a kinda scary response has been posted by MAJ. I don’t think it’s all that complicated, and requires little but basic arithmetic skill.

I’m afraid it is exactly as complicated—or simple, depending on your perspective—as MAJ described. Anyone with a scientific calculator with a log key can use the formula he gave for two measurements. For three or more measurements it is more complicated. As he says, if the PSA is following the model, then you could use a least squares line for log P, but most lay people wouldn’t know what that means and wouldn’t have the tools to do it. An alternative would be to use the formula with different pairs of values and estimate the doubling time for each such pair. Then you could compare the values you got. If they showed very different values, then that would indicate the model probably didn’t apply. If they showed similar but different values, that could give you some estimate of the approximate doubling time. It is important to remember in all this, as my urologist likes to say, it isn’t rocket science. Gross differences in doubling times can mean something, but relatively small differences are probably meaningless. Your doctor should have software tools available to indicate a doubling time if he is going to use it in diagnosis. But it would only be one tool and more likely than not, just a glance at the figures would give him enough information, together with the other data, to help draw a conclusion. Here’s the definition of PSADT from the website of the Prostate Cancer Research Institute: "PSA doubling time (PSADT): the calculation of the time it takes for the PSA value to double based on at least three values separated by at least three months each; before diagnosis, a PSADT of less than 10 years may be an indication of the presence of PC."

This is a definition, but it doesn’t tell you how to find the doubling time from values if the ratio of the values during the time interval is not a doubling. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – And from "What Every Doctor Who Treats Male Patients Should Know," a May 2005 paper by Strum and Pogliano that all of us should copy and give to our primary care physicians. "PSA velocity (PSAV) and PSA doubling time (PSADT) are important markers that can indicate the existence of prostate cancer. Blood sampling for PSA determinations, done at least three months apart, and by the same laboratory using the same testing procedure, are necessary to establish PSAV and PSADT. The validity of such determinations is increased if such testing involves at least three determinations over an 18-month span of time. However, a progressive and serial increase in PSA values should raise concern that prostate cancer is present and that a greater degree of vigilance is mandatory.

Donors Underwrite DeLay’s Deluxe Lifestyle By LARRY MARGASAK and SHARON THEIMER, Associated Press Writers December 21, 2005 WASHINGTON (AP) – As Rep. Tom DeLay crossed the country to raise millions of dollars for himself and fellow Republicans, he also improved his lifestyle. Over the past six years, the former House majority leader or his associates have visited places of luxury most Americans have never seen, often getting there aboard corporate jets arranged by lobbyists and other special interests. Public documents reviewed by The Associated Press tell the story: at least 48 visits to golf clubs and resorts with lush fairways; 100 flights aboard company planes; 200 stays at hotels, many world-class; and 500 meals at restaurants, some averaging nearly $200 for a dinner for two. The meals and trips for DeLay and his associates were paid with donations collected by the campaign committees, political action committees and children’s charity the Texas Republican created during his rise to a top spot in Congress. Put them together and a picture of an opulent lifestyle emerges. "A life to enjoy. The excuse to escape,” Palmas del Mar, an oceanside Puerto Rican resort visited by DeLay, promised in a summer ad on its Web site as a golf ball bounced into a hole and an image of a sunset appeared. The Caribbean vacation spot has casino gambling, horseback riding, snorkeling, deep-sea fishing and private beaches. "He was very friendly. We always see the relaxed side of politicians,” said Daniel Vassi, owner of the French bistro Chez Daniel at Palmas del Mar. Vassi said DeLay has eaten at his restaurant every year for the past three, and was last there in April with about 20 other people, including the resort’s owners. The restaurant is a cozy and popular place on the yacht-lined marina at Palmas del Mar. Dishes include bouillabaisse for about $35.50, Dover sole for $37.50 and filet mignon for $28.50. Palmas del Mar is also a DeLay donor, giving $5,000 to his Americans for a Republican Majority PAC in 2000. Since he joined the House leadership as majority whip in 1995, DeLay has raised at least $35 million for his campaign, PACs, foundation and legal defense fund. He hasn’t faced a serious re-election threat in recent years, giving him more leeway than candidates in close races to spend campaign money. AP’s review found DeLay’s various organizations spent at least $1 million over the past six years on top hotels, restaurants, golf resorts and corporate jet flights for their boss and his associates. The spending shows how political power can buy access to the lifestyles of the rich and famous. While it’s illegal for a lawmaker to tap political donations for a family vacation, it is legal to spend it in luxury if the stated purpose is raising more money or talking politics. Until his recent indictment in Texas on political money laundering charges, DeLay was the second most powerful lawmaker in the House and as such, could command an audience of donors wherever he went. DeLay attorney Don McGahn declined to identify which trips listed in the reports were taken by DeLay and which by his associates. But he said all the travel was legal and not done for DeLay’s benefit. "Raising political money costs money,” the attorney said. "Mr. DeLay has done extensive fundraising, and traveled far and wide to do so, but you would be hard-pressed to find someone who has raised more for others, whether for candidates or political parties,” McGahn said. Special interests routinely make donations and attend fundraisers to gain access to government decisionmakers. And while other congressional leaders accepted trips and used political money to cover travel, none compares with DeLay: -Campaign and PAC reports filed by Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, R- Tenn., show several payments to companies for travel, including Cracker Barrel, Union Pacific, Schering-Plough and Home Depot. But there were few visits to golf courses, and those were mostly close to home. -Reports from Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., show expenses at resorts in South Carolina, New Mexico and Puerto Rico. But he too holds most events closer to home, such as Las Vegas casinos and Lake Tahoe resorts. -House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., has held events at ritzy hotels such as The Mark in New York and the Four Seasons in Atlanta, but had few corporate flights or visits to resorts, according to her reports. House Speaker Dennis Hastert, R-Ill., comes closest to rivaling DeLay’s travels, reporting fundraisers at Walt Disney Parks and Resorts in Florida, the Ritz-Carlton in Kapalua, Hawaii, the Phoenician Resort in Scottsdale, Ariz., and the Waterfall Resort in Alaska. Hastert’s groups also paid for dozens of corporate jet flights and restaurant meals. Some say DeLay pushes the limits, and risks alienating donors. "I don’t think the people that contributed to me would believe it was a good expenditure of their hard-earned dollars for me to go and play golf and enjoy life anywhere,” said former Rep. Charlie Stenholm, a fiscally conservative Texas Democrat who lost his House seat following DeLay-led redistricting. Rep. Christopher Shays, R-Conn., a Republican author of legislation that reformed campaign finance, was just as critical of DeLay’s spending habits. "It’s excessive, it’s obscene, it distorts someone’s ability to have good judgment,” said Shays, a longtime critic of DeLay. "It’s an abuse of campaign finance law and of our ethics law. It’s harmful to Congress in general and the Republican Party in particular. We need a new leader.” Told of DeLay’s spending, a $50 contributor to DeLay’s ARMPAC said he doesn’t expect politicians to use his donations in any particular way. "I guess it’s almost an automatic fifty bucks to anybody who’s on my side, if that’s the right way to put it,” said George Wrenn, a retired architectural historian from Freedom, N.H. DeLay’s travels with recently indicted lobbyist Jack Abramoff are now under criminal investigation. But those trips were paid by special interests directly under the banner of congressional fact-finding. DeLay’s own political empire has underwritten far more travel. The destinations for DeLay or his political team include a Ritz-Carlton hotel in Jamaica; the Prince Hotel in Hapuna Beach, Hawaii; the Michelangelo Hotel in New York; the Wyndham El Conquistador Resort & Golden Door Spa in Fajardo, Puerto Rico; and the Phoenician Resort in Scottsdale, Ariz. There’s also the Ritz-Carlton in Naples, Fla., offering "dazzling views of the Gulf of Mexico, warm golden sunsets and three miles of pristine beach,” plus golf, a spa, goose-down comforters, marble bathrooms and private, ocean-view balconies. Rooms cost from about $389 to more than $3,000 a night in December, the month DeLay’s PAC spent $4,570 on lodging there in 2004. "He liked to talk to people,” said Pedro Muriel, a waiter at Puerto Rico’s El Conquistador Resort. Muriel recalled DeLay staying in an enclave of privately owned red tile-roofed villas. The villas have up to three bedrooms, kitchens, living rooms and French doors that open onto terraces or balconies facing the Caribbean. Villa prices average about $1,300 a night. Guests get their own butlers. The resort offers six swimming pools and an 18-hole championship golf course. DeLay’s donors also have financed visits to country clubs and tournament- quality golf courses, including the exclusive Baltusrol Golf Club in Springfield, N.J., site of this summer’s PGA Championship; Nemacolin Woodlands Resort in Farmington, Pa., home of another PGA event; and Harbour Town Golf Links, a course at Hilton Head Island, S.C., that was designed in consultation with Jack Nicklaus. "World class. Dynamic. Luxury resort. Spend a day, spend a week, spend a lifetime,” another DeLay fundraising spot, the ChampionsGate golf resort near Orlando, Fla., invites on its Web site. Dining at fine restaurants also is routine. The stops for DeLay and his associates include Morton’s of Chicago, where the average dinner for two goes for about $170 before tax and tip, and "21” in Manhattan, a longtime glamour spot where American caviar is $38 for a taste. When DeLay wants to head somewhere without the hassle of commercial travel, he often asks a company for its jet and uses donations to pay for it. Dozens of businesses have lent DeLay their planes, including tobacco companies UST, RJ Reynolds, and Philip Morris, plus energy concerns such as El Paso, Panda, Reliant and Dynegy. R.J. Reynolds has let DeLay use a company plane at least nine times since 1999, once joining Philip Morris in making jets available for a DeLay PAC fundraiser at a Puerto Rican resort in winter 2002. R.J. Reynolds spokesman David Howard said planes are lent usually at lawmakers’ request and are only done if jets aren’t needed for company business. "It’s much more convenient as opposed to your regular commercial travel,” Howard said, noting there is no need to go through airport security.

Tom DeLay crossed the country to raise millions > of dollars for himself and fellow Republicans, he also improved his > lifestyle. > Over the past six years, the former House majority leader or his > associates have visited places of luxury most Americans have never seen, > often getting there aboard corporate jets arranged by lobbyists and other > special interests. > Public documents reviewed by The Associated Press tell the story: at > least 48 visits to golf clubs and resorts with lush fairways; 100 flights > aboard company planes; 200 stays at hotels, many world-class; and 500 > meals at restaurants, some averaging nearly $200 for a dinner for two. > The meals and trips for DeLay and his associates were paid with donations > collected by the campaign committees, political action committees and > children’s charity the Texas Republican created during his rise to a top > spot in Congress. > Put them together and a picture of an opulent lifestyle emerges. > "A life to enjoy. The excuse to escape,” Palmas del Mar, an oceanside > Puerto Rican resort visited by DeLay, promised in a summer ad on its Web > site as a golf ball bounced into a hole and an image of a sunset > appeared. > The Caribbean vacation spot has casino gambling, horseback riding, > snorkeling, deep-sea fishing and private beaches. > "He was very friendly. We always see the relaxed side of politicians,” > said Daniel Vassi, owner of the French bistro Chez Daniel at Palmas del > Mar. Vassi said DeLay has eaten at his restaurant every year for the past > three, and was last there in April with about 20 other people, including > the resort’s owners. > The restaurant is a cozy and popular place on the yacht-lined marina at > Palmas del Mar. Dishes include bouillabaisse for about $35.50, Dover sole > for $37.50 and filet mignon for $28.50.
Most of you who know me here, know I am terrified of going to the doctor. Jackie, I think you know what I am talking about! :) I will do anything I can to keep from going. If it’s a doctor I know will not be taking my blood pressure, I am ok because my BP goes sky high sometimes when I go to my regular NP. My sinus doc never takes it, so I am ok going to him. This thing with my foot, I hate to say, I knew I would not go to the doctor. Now if it had not gotten better my husband would have thrown me over his shoulder and taken me to the car and driven me there. LOL This is a real phobia, white coat syndrome. I didn’t used to have it until my first panic attack in a doctor’s office. Of course it is high and the heart rate goes crazy. I can be so calm, doing my deep breathing and even taking a benzo beforehand, but when that nurse puts that cuff on my arm, a series of events unfold. I have gotten to where I say "Look, don’t freak out when you see it’s high. I take it at home and it’s extremely low but I am phobic about it in this particular doctor’s office. " One nurse knows when I get there and always says "Don’t worry, I won’t say ‘OH MY GOD.’ " That is the most unnerving thing. They say OMG!! I know I should have gone to the doctor with my foot. I pretty much self treated it with ibuprophen and staying off of it. It’s still sore but I can walk on it and the redness and most of the swelling is gone now. I was able to put a shoe on yesterday. I guess it wasn’t gout, since I read it is almost unheard of for a woman my age to have that. Usually it’s elderly women way past menopause. Not there yet!!! I did break that foot, hitting it against a wooden magazine rack about 17 years ago. I had a fracture across the top of that foot. The fact that the symptoms started like gout, this could be another of those "Vicki, you are part of the 1% of the population to have this." I can’t win the lottery but I get that all of the time from my NP. I am in the 1% who can take Zoloft for a year and then try it again in 4 or 5 years and it doesn’t help anymore. Her stats may be wrong but I sometimes do feel a bit like a freak!!! :) My husband was really worried about how my foot looked. As the swelling left, the redness went from the entire foot to the right 3/4 of it. Just a huge red blotch! I don’t eat much red meat, or any meat for that matter. I don’t drink much alcohol at all. Everything WebMD said can cause it was not something I do. Anyway, it is better. I promise I will go to the doctor if it reoccurs. I hope some of you can relate to the doctor fear. My MIL goes when she sneezes or coughs one time. I have never been that way. My kids and husband aren’t either. On a different note: The former houseguest is gone to India and I won’t be bothered with emails and phone calls for a while. I just cannot talk to him. I was hurt that he tried to tear my sister and me apart with his lies. Bad news, I’m telling you. Thank you all for your wonderful advice. Love, Vicki!! — The charter is available at: http://readystump.algebra.com/~asapm

Thanks. Today the swelling has gone down quite a bit and I can walk. I have taken some prescription strength ibuprophen I had and it seems to be helping. Hopefully it isn’t gout. It certainly sounds like it, from what I have read about it. My poor dad had it in his hands when he died. For some reason they couldn’t give him the meds for it and they were so swollen and he would react if one of us touched his hands. — The charter is available at: http://readystump.algebra.com/~asapm

And so do I. I’m scared stiff of doctors/hospitals/medical procedures. On a different note: The former houseguest is gone to India and I won’t be bothered with emails and phone calls for a while.

This is a very good thing. It will give you relief from the stress he caused you and when he returns he’ll be busy doing other things. Philip — The charter is available at: http://readystump.algebra.com/~asapm

– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Most of you who know me here, know I am terrified of going to the doctor.

>Why don’t you launch potatoes with that gun? I’m too poor to buy a >gun, although I could probably get a cheap pistol from a pawn shop. >I am thinking about buying a scanner, so I’ll have something to >listen to at work. I need a scanner that can receive the 800 and >1200Mhzs. bands and analog trunking, so I can hear both sides of >the conversation. ><chesucat twitched>

Good idea about the potato! I’ve seen people fire tennis balls and some guy makes an adapter that fires golf balls. My Yugo SKS 59/66 cost me $125. Most dealers will let you pay them off too. If you end up with a semi-auto, make sure you are allowed to fire it at your shooting range. Pistols are neat, but I’ve never had the desire to own one. I just sold my fathers scanner, I think it was a pro-39…not positive tho. I have an old pro-46 which can be modified by turning it on whilst holding certain keys down…2,9 and Enter I think.. Back in the day, most every cordless phone ran somewhere in the 46.00-47.00 range and it was sooo easy to spy on people..lol Best, Chris

Anyone here own a rifle? If so, whats your favorite thing to blaze away at? So far I’ve slaughtered a toy doll, annihilated my old computer and blown a bowling ball to bits. I have a Yugo SKS 59/66 semi-auto that holds ten round, tho I do have a larger magazine that holds 30 rounds. It also fires grenades. This weekend I got an inert grenade and launcher. You can take the grenade out and fire tennis balls too if so desired, which I’ll probably do. All I need to do is to buy some blanks or make my own and I can fire this thing. Supposed to go up to 300 yards..lol I’ve also modified it a bit..Put a vented handguard on it which makes it look meaner than it already does, put a small scope on it and now have the launcher. I want to modify the trigger as well. Right now the trigger feels like crap and has a 32-35 pound pull. I want to get it down to a 20 pound pull. The other day at the range, some guy let me fire his blackpowder rifle, which had a 7 pound pull! It was such a hairtrigger that all I did was touch it and it went off…the guy should have told me this cause it scared the hell out of me. Best, Chris

Response:

>I might some day try to get myself a legal rifle. I’d like to go hunt >deers and elks. I have thought about it, but yet I have not dared asked >my psychiatrist if it would be theorethically possible. I can see some >preduce in regards a nutty owning a gun. >I’ve thought it would be cool to get permit to buy explosives, then I >would annihilate a bunch of my computers on a wide open field. >5-4-3-2-1-0-LIFTOFF. Which one flies higher, a Pentium or 486.. >Well, this one is one of these would-be-cool things.

I can’t hunt, I can’t kill things… When I first got my semi, I never told my shrink. Much MUCH later I told him (and my therapist) that I was an avid target shooter. Neither of them said a word really, nothing negative that is… I believe that if I had asked if I should get one, that they both would have said no, flat-out. I know I’m not going to go killing people with it, or myself. I trust myself and am extremely safe around it.. As for explosives, I never had a chance to play with them…Could be fun, but it scares me because of potential shrapnel.. I would guess the Pentium would fly higher because its smaller and lighter than a 486? When I shot apart my 486 at 100 yards, the damage it did to the comp was unreal. The bullet (7.62×39) would have a very small entry hole and a huge hole ripped in the back. The bullet would also ‘drag’ things right out the back of the comp. One even ripped half the hard drive right out…lol Best, Chris Best, Chris

Maybe you should go drive some golfballs.. that helps me.. I get SO PISSED at the golf balls I cant hit.. that I forget why I was there and pissed / disturbed in the first place. I dont think i have ever once actually hit the ball, unless it was a putt. "Lix Tetrax" <scopethel…@hotmail.com> wrote in message

I would probably describe it as > psychic disturbance. I wrote a suicide note to myself, and it made me > feel better in a way. Just the only way I could think of to get the > shit feelings out without hurting anyone.
