Question:
Jack is the winningest golfer of all time, but I would still call Ben Hogan the best golfer of all time. No one studied the game more than Hogan or worked harder than Hogan (no, not even Vijay) in pursuit of the perfect golf swing. Unfortunately, there is no way to know what he could have accomplished if he hadn’t had that auto accident. He never completely recovered from his injuries, yet still won on a consistant basis afterwards. Certainly there was never a more intense or focused competitior. He actually scared some of his fellow competitiors with his intensity. Good Golf Dan – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Jack is the best but Ben Hogan, Byron Nelson and Sam Snead are real close runners up.

This message is for the owner of the D/FW golf page. I am appalled at your comments on Paul Azinger. TO pick on him after what he has gone through is just downright mean. I hope you get a disease that is life-threatening you jerk. And as for your hero Tiger (Heinz 57) Woods, get a life and quit listening to what the media tells you. When Woods wins 19 major championships E-Mail me. The only reference to Jack Nicklaus on your page is a bad one. He is and always will be the greatest golfer of all time. 18 majors and countless other titles on the tour, is not something your little Mr. Woods can say. And by the way what is wrong with belonging to a country club or can you only afford to play on municipal courses you moron. Vijay Singh can putt (1998 PGA Championship).
I didn’t see the D/FW golf page, but if someone has said vicious and repugnant things about Azinger then he is a jerk. Just about as much a jerk as someone who would wish a life-threatening disease on anyone…or as big an asshole as someone that would even deign to mention another persons ethnicity (Heinz 57?, and your heiritage is?)… and this guy on the D/FW page is as big a schmuck as anyone who would pull the snobbish trick of talking about what someone can afford. I must agree that the Golden Bear is the best golfer of all with the likes of Hogan, Snead, Nelson, and Palmer on his heels. There is no way Tiger Woods could ever come near the likes of the others. He’s never shown any ability to stand out head and shoulders above the rest. For every 300 yard drive he hits John Daly can hit one fifty yards past. For every great long iron shot, Davis Love III and Vijay Singh are ready to take on the challenge. And for every great putt, there’s a Brad Faxon, Willie Wood, or Jim Furyk waiting to top him. He just isn’t as dominant as the media makes him out to be. And he’s a hypocrit to preach golf etiquette and then turn around and slam his club into his tee or into the middle of the fairway.

balance deleted for brevity It’s good that you vented your anger here. I would have hated to have read about you in the newspaper going up in a tower with a rifle to work off your frustrations. Next time, however, you might consider actually giving some *thought* to what you say, rather than merely acting out your emotions and stooping to a junior-high level of intelligence by calling people names. Either that or you might consider increasing the dosage on your medication. Randy
Randy, This is the first time that I have taken the opportunity to read a post you you, and I must say you expressed your distress over the previous posters remarks very eloquently. I haven’t had the privilege of visiting your website, but I will likely take the time to do so soon. The contrast between your generally gentlemanly remarks and your antagonists less than mannerly comments made for an amusing read. Keep up the good work. Tom

Sorry for the re-post. In my earlier response to TYLERX3, I ommitted something, and this was so juicy, I wanted to make sure and get it right… This message is for the owner of the D/FW golf page.
That would be me. You are referring to the original Dallas/Fort Worth Golf website, which inexplicably, remains online at http://www.flash.net/~rrb despite the fact that my account with Flash Net was closed over a year ago when I moved from the DFW area to Atlanta. A newer version (although only slightly changed) is now up at http://randb.home.mindspring.com I never update it anymore, since I no longer reside in DFW, and instead, prefer to direct what little energy I have to freshening the content on my current, more generic website at http://wwwgolfer.home.mindpring.com I am appalled at your comments on Paul Azinger. TO pick on him after what he has gone through is just downright mean. I hope you get a disease that is life-threatening you jerk.
Those are some pretty strong words. Anyone who knows me or knows even a little bit about me knows that I would never "pick on" Paul Azinger, one of the true gentlemen of the game of golf. But since YOU think I have, let’s go back and quote EXACTLY what I said about him. And while we’re at it, let’s put my comments in the context in which they were stated: On my website, there’s a section in which I re-published some of my favorite postings in RSG. One of those postings was a response to a post by Dan Danao, in which he ripped Tiger Woods (shortly before his Masters victory), saying, "The great golfers are those who got Major championships." (I agreed with him.) Then he listed some of those "great" golfers: "Like Faldo, Norman, Azinger, Couples, Daly, etc…." I responded by offering a short comment about each of those players. Included was this comment about Mr. Azinger: Azinger: Everyone’s "favorite son," especially since his health problems. But choked away the British to Faldo, and has only one major. We’re all pulling for him. Now, how in the world could you possibly interpret that as "picking on him?" I said he’s "everybody’s ‘favorite son," and that "we’re all pulling for him." Even *he* said he "choked away" the British Open title! He did, and like all red-blooded Americans who wanted to see one of our own win The Open Championship, I hated to see it. But it happened, and he was the first to admit he choked. (Let me add that there have been numerous threads in this forum in which the subject of "choking" has been the topic. I have NEVER accused any player of choking, except when the player himself has acknowledged it. Golf is an impossible game to master, and even the best players make unfornate mistakes at most inopportune times. My contention has always been that sometimes they try to pull off a shot and it just doesn’t work out the way they’d hoped it would. That’s not the same thing as choking. But after the ‘87 British, Azinger said he choked. Otherwise, I never would have mentioned it.) Furthermore, I would never wish ill on anyone. Your pointed remark of how you hope I get a "life threatening illness" is a fine statement about *your* character. I hope you lead a long and healthy life. And I hope you lead it far, far away from me. And as for your hero Tiger (Heinz 57) Woods, get a life and quit listening to what the media tells you. When Woods wins 19 major championships E-Mail me.
First of all, I *am* the media! I’ve met Tiger, spent time with Earl, Fluff and Butch. YOU’RE the one who formulates your opinion of players based on your reaction to what you read in magazines, see on TV or hear on the radio, not me. My opinions are based on my conversations with the players themselves, their caddies, their instructors and tournament officials. I don’t need some self-annointed know-it-all whose only calling-card as an expert analyst is that he has an opinion, owns a keyboard and pays a monthly fee to his internet service provider. If anyone needs to get a life, it’s you, padnuh. Furthermore, I have no tolerance whatsoever for anyone who trivializes the accomplishments of anyone — professional golfer or otherwise — based on their heritage. Your reference to him as "Tiger (Heinz 57) Woods" speaks volumes about YOUR character. And by the way, it’s "20" majors for Jack, not "19." The only reference to Jack Nicklaus on your page is a bad one. He is and always will be the greatest golfer of all time. 18 majors and countless other titles on the tour, is not something your little Mr. Woods can say.
Now you’re saying Jack has "18" majors. Let me repeat: it’s "20." That includes ALL his USGA titles, which Jack *does* count as majors. And incidentally, it was Jack himself who was quoted as saying that Tiger will win more green jackets than he and Arnie combined. Not me. But let’s go back again and quote exactly what I said about Jack, since you take such exception to it… Putting it in context, I was re-publishing a posting titled, "My Favorite Swings on TOUR." Jack’s was not among them, but I added a little something extra to the posting I called, "Best ALL-TIME Swings." For the sake of correctness, I’ll quote the entire list: Byron Nelson (so repeatable they named the machine after it) Bobby Jones (as fluid as Freddy, accurate as Faldo, popular as Tiger) Ben Hogan (father of the modern swing, invented concept of "plane") Sam Snead (nobody’s ever been more relaxed over a golf ball) Al Geiberger (everybody who shoots 59 gets on my list, except Beck) [Ed. note: this posting was made before Notah Begay and Doug Dunakey shot 59s this year on the Nike TOUR.] Jack (like Elvis, all you need is the first name) Tiger Woods (I know, he’s proved little so far–just that he’s the best young player in the game, which by itself, is quite an accomplishment. I’m putting him on the list now to save the trouble of adding him later.) [Ed. note: this posting was made a few weeks before Tiger won The Masters Tournament.] And you have a problem with my comment about Jack? What’s to object about? What could *I* possibly add to the 30+ years of commentary about the swing of the greatest golfer of all-time? I felt it sufficient enough to simply editorialize on him by acknowledging his greatness, pointing out the fact that simply referring to him as "Jack," at least within the golf world, is sufficient to identify him. Are you suggesting this is not true? You may not like my writing style (I don’t apologize), and you may not agree with my opinions (you’re certainly entitled), but just for the record let me add this: I spoke last week at the PGA Championship with no less an authority than Jim Flick, Nicklaus’ partner at the Nicklaus-Flick Golf Schools and Jack’s mentor since the passing of his longtime coach, Jack Grout. Mr. Flick told me he thought Ernie Els has the best swing in the history of the game. I said to him, "That’s quite a statement coming from the man who works so closely with the greatest golfer of all time." Flick’s response was, "There’s a distinction between the greatest *golfer* of all time and the greatest *swing* of all time." The point is, even Nicklaus’ coach doesn’t think Jack’s swing is the best. *I*, however, DID include it among my list of "Best ALL-TIME swings." And you found my comment objectionable. I find that strange. And by the way what is wrong with belonging to a country club or can you only afford to play on municipal courses you moron.
Now that you’ve reduced this dialogue to little more than junior-high name-calling, you make it very easy for me. You are referring to a couple of sections on my DFW GOLF website — my "List O’ Links," and "My Top Ten Lists." I had two reasons for publishing this website: (1) To practice my web publishing skills (which I was just learning at the time); and (2) To provide to all the golfing business/pleasure travelers a comprehensive (at the time) listing of all the public-access/daily-fee courses in the DFW area (my "List O’ Links"), since most travelers couldn’t get on the private courses. It was intended as a service to those people who might be traveling with their golf clubs and might be looking for a place to play where they could get on. (As a sidebar, I have received hundreds of thank-you notes from travelers who found this information useful.) It was never my intent to include a review of the many fine private golf clubs in DFW. Had your attention span been just slightly longer than that of a gnat, you’d have noticed that I included separate "Top Ten Lists" of both public AND private courses, since the two can’t really fairly be compared. But in response to your pretentious attitude, let me assure you I’ve played most all of the private courses in the area, including Colonial, Preston Trail, Bent Tree, Oak Cliff CC, Stonebridge, Las Colinas CC, Cottonwood Valley and the TPC/Las Colinas, and others too numerous to mention. Furthermore, I have played clubs around the country you will only dream of playing, including a couple not even your local pro could get you on. And if you must know, no, since I play 4-5 times a week, I probably can’t afford to play private courses at $100 and up every time I play. Nor would I choose to if I could. I would venture to add that few can, and that it’s nothing to be ashamed of. Your pretentious attitude is, however, extremely offensive, and is exactly what has caused golf to take a bad rap as an "elitist" game. We can all take comfort in knowing that with each passing day, there are fewer and fewer people with your attitude. The game (and the world) is better off as a result. Vijay Singh can putt (1998 PGA Championship).
