Question:
Clara writes- 3. Why roses such as Bing Crosby and Bob Hope are still in general circulation continues to surprise me. *** Oh great. I think I ordered ‘Bing’ this year…
<Snicker It is commonly believed that people in ARS are older than dirt ("I encountered the usual sea of gray hairs, blue hair and foreheads invading carefully brushed back hair…."); *** I’ve been thinking about coloring my hair blue… do you suppose that idea entered my subconcious from hanging around rose people?
***With all the chemicals you and the Paula plonk in your hair, I’m amazed you have any left. Probably feels like straw too. I suggest you both go green next. Green is my favorite color. yet the buying public still exists for performers who exited decades ago or disappeared from the public eye. *** Burt Lancaster… sigh
***Sheesh! I suppose you have him hanging somewhere on your wall? Perhaps rose growers aside from the ARS are old as well. *** SUZANNE! can I plonk him for that?
***Hell, you can quadruple-plonk him! Is it a good thing that roses are now being named after Whoopi and Barbra or is it a tribute to the comparative youth of the hybridizers or the generational change in the buying public? *** it’s like lead in gasoline… fifty years ago, they knew they didn’t need it, but they could patent lead additives and not the ethanol-alcohol stuff. HENCE! two thousands tons of lead are pumped into the air we breathe, etc., etc., every day, lead doesn’t break down like other things, lead is lead is lead… it’s all about money, see? Money Talks. If it was a generational change thing, somebody’d be naming roses for Bono.
***Bono? Who be Bono? Oh, I get it – you mean Sonny Bono. The one who plonked himself into a tree on a ski slope and landed Sunny-side up, right? Suzanne

I’m sure a representative will contact you shortly.
The other thing is, if you check Deja, the list of people posting here last spring and summer is not too different from the list posting here now. Not that I ever do the Deja thing.

Both deserved even lower ratings. Real dogs. Too bad that many times lousy roses are named for famous people to sell them.
Maybe Mack could make one of his famous lists: dogs named after the rich and famous? So far we have: Bing Bob Hope Lucille Ball Gracie Allen Barbra Bush…

Ha! you’ll never see *gray* hairs in Texas, it’s against the law and the cops are tough down here. People don’t go gray here, they go blonde usually. Blue hair is OK, in Deep Ellum and the West End of Dallas.. *** I’ve been thinking about coloring my hair blue… do you suppose that idea entered my subconcious from hanging around rose people?
You could go blue with black streaks. That would be phat. <snip *** Burt Lancaster… sigh ***Sheesh! I suppose you have him hanging somewhere on your wall?
Will you send him to me when you get tired of him? Can *always* find room for one of those. <snip

I do my best. It’s tough work to keep this place clean, what with all the thorns and dirt and stuff.

I just looked up Bing Crosby & Bob Hope (Bing sends his best, BTW), and I didn’t know ratings could go that LOW! Bing Crosby, 4.7, Bob Hope, 5.1–never seen either one, and wish I could… I’d think that anything that could muster an occasional bloom on the end of a stem would rate higher. (Probably a grower should come up with a new BH.) (A little-known story–those two really were best friends–every year they’d take a quiet little vacation together, always to the same place. And they’d play golf every day for a week at the Victoria GC Country Club, a jewel that overlooks the sound, in Victoria BC.) This just is another demonstration of the typical lover of roses is a romantic, emotional pushover. They will do everything–possibly up to and including CPR, to save a rose that they liked–they will finally say "I shovel-pruned that baby." with studied indifference, yet the truth is, it’s taken them 3 or more seasons to bring themselves to do it… Of course, the afore-mentioned doesn’t include me–I just happen to like blackspot and weak-necked, spindly roses…… Linda OR 7-8

says… Clearly I’ve stumbled into the wrong newsgroup to…..searching for the "fatal flaw"…. Actually, I think you were right. I, for one, too easily dismissed your inquiry. Mea culpa, mea culpa, mea maxima culpa. 1. I did fill out the form on the ARS website which facilitated the process to the extent that the usual search for envelope and stamp was truncated.
*** anything to save a lousy thirty-three cents… sheeeesh… talk about cheap! 2. As usual, understanding which roses appear on the list and which do not is beyond my ken.
*** Mine, too… the last time I tried to fill the thing out, I found I grew only two or three of them! Nevertheless I diligently attempted to assess the roses that I do grow. The idea of a maximum half point up or down was an innovation that occasioned much discussion at the time and my own initial reaction was favorable.
