Question:
This weekend my wife and I had the pleasure of attending the first (annual, I hope!!!) RSG Virginia Beach outing hosted my Scott Shirey. What a great time we had. In spite of the dire predictions on The Weather Channel (scattered showers on Friday, 90% cahnce of rain on Saturday adn 70% chance of rain on Sunday), NOT A DROP of rain fell on the golf course while we were there. I don’t know how Scott arranged for us to miss all that rain, but he just about achieved Thor-like status this weekend.
I was thinking of you guys…. wish I could have made it, but too busy at this time! Sounds like a great event, and I will make it some year if you have it again! — — — David "Thor" Collard — http://ttsoft.com/thor

There was a good turn out. We had a round on Friday, two rounds on Saturday and a final round on Sunday. We also had two great meals together and, admittedly, too much beer. I hesitate to try to list everyone who played because I know I’ll leave someone out, but here’s a shot at it: Scott and his wife Jenifer, Lumpy (Bill Glass) and his brother John, Tom B., Will B., Doug, Dr. Larry, Doug, JB, Kenny and his better half Gayle. In addition, Bill’s wife Jennifer and their two kids were along to spend some time at the beach. Firday’s round was played at Honey Bee Golf Course, a Rees Jones design. We began the day’s activities with the Mike Dalecki Spine Alignment Challenge. I’m going to cover that in another post. Then we split into foursomes and played. Honey Bee is not a long course, but there’s water on about half the holes, so you have to watch what you’re doing. The course was wet and there was no roll to be had. Saturday’s two rounds were held at Hell’s Point, an aptly named rees Jones Design. The morning practice round started far too early for most at 8:30 considering Friday night. This is a tough course. It’s tight, heavily wooded, it was wet, the greens were recently aerated and there are just no bail out areas anywhere. You hit it straight or you’re a dead man. I think it’s safe to say a good number of balls were left on that course Saturday. Saturday’s second round was for the coveted Dixie Cup. The wind started to blow and it got cold and Friday night was taking its toll. I know that my main thoughts on the last four holes were "KEEP IT NEAR THE CARTPATH". After the smoke had cleared (and the sun had set), John and I were tied for the cup. Scott tried to tell us we had to have a playoff, but I was already in my car and John was already in his and niether of us was budging!!!! We agreed on an 18 hole playoff the next day. Sunday’s round was dubbed the Tom Briggam Invitational in honor of Tom who somehow managed to get the whole bunch of us onto his home course, Greenbrier Country Club. This is another Rees Jones design and a real treat to play. It also was wet from the overnight rain, but was really in very good shape for this time of year. These greens were smooth and f_a_s_t. It was pretty funny to watch everyone on the practice green rolling the ball right off the green. We went from aerated greens on Saturday to greens that seemed like about 3 billion on the Stimpmeter for Sunday. I used to live down in Southern Virginia and never managed to finagle an invite to play at Greenbrier. RSG comes through again. Thanks, Tom. I’m not going to get into any actual scores (too embarrassing), but let’s just say that the playoff (with Scott along as ref) was not a thing of beauty. John and I had a tight match in spots <g. The lead changed a lot and no lead, no matter how large, was safe. When it was over, John took me by 2 strokes and won the Dixie Cup. Congratulations to John. It was a good (well, maybe not good, but certainly fun) match and he’s one of the nicest guys you’ll ever meet. It turns out that John doesn’t live far from me, and Gayle and I are looking forward to playing some golf with him and brother Lumpy when Lumpy visits town. Finally, a word about our host Scott. You may get the impression that he’s kind of a wild man from some of his posts on RSG. You would be correct. On top of that, he and Jenifer were the perfect host and hostess. I know they both went to some trouble to coordinate and organize things. In addition to getting the tee times lined up, they even had goodie bags on Saturday, not to mention commissioning the Dixie Cup itself. I had the chance to play a couple of rounds with Scott over the weekend and Gayle got to play a round with his wife Jenifer on Sunday. They are both a blast and we’re already looking forward to next year. Kenny Kenny Stultz RSG Roll Call: http://u1.netgate.net/~kirby34/rsg/stultzk.htm
