Question:
I was driving off on a par-5 hole, when I violated laws of common sense and hit the person in front of me that was ’so far out’ on the fairway that I didnt think I could hit them. Whats so embarassing about that? I hit the same person again on the par 4 hole directly after this par 5. You and I would have had a long talk if I was anywhere near this.
It happened when I first started playing– I didn’t know any better, nor had any common sense.

This wasn’t my embarrassing moment, but I honestly believe it eventually cost me my job. I used to work for a company that sponsored monthly golf tournaments for its employees. All the managers were big golf fanatics and played in these tournaments. During one tournament, the director for my department knocked his ball about 18 inches from the cup on a par three – a hole which was chosen for a closest to the pin contest. 999 times out of 1000, that shot would have won the contest. However, playing in the last group, I hit the pin and had an 8-inch tap-in for a birdie. At the awards ceremony in the clubhouse banquet room, the tournament organizer announced the award for closest to the pin on the 7th hole. The director jumped up and danced around with his arms raised above his head yelling , "I’m the man! I’m the man!" The tournament organizer stammered, "No, (name withheld to avoid embarrassing him further). Stuart’s the man. He knocked it to within 8-inches." I’ve never seen a room with 200 rowdy people go so silent so fast…. The director turned beet red and just glared at me. For the rest of the afternoon, he never took his eyes off me. That afternoon, I made his "hit" list. You can guess the rest of this story….. Stuart Winsor

I must admit that I laughed and cringed at most of the stories. The ones that made me laugh most were Mark DMay (hitting the pool shed), Mark Blake and his novel use of old gloves and The Demented Golfer and his runaway cart. Sorry Sandman etc. but most of the others are just too close to home; I’ve just about done them all at some time. One that I recall a long time ago didn’t happen to me. It was on the first tee of one of the open competitions at our course. Some guy hit a screaming pull hook right through the pro-shop window. Needless to say that both the shop and the tee have since moved. It’s bad enough to hit a bad shot but to have everybody come running to see what happened.

Personally I can't think of any other than when I duff the ball 10 yards off the first tee (I probably refuse to remember worse moments). The 12th hole at a little course near my house is a short par 4. If you can get the ball about 230 yards it will hit on the down slope of a good size, and very steep hill and roll down to about 40 yards out. I hit my drive short and the ball came to rest on the crest of this hill. I parked the cart on the path but failed to engage the parking brake. As I was addressing my ball the cart had slowly give way to the effects of gravity. The cart started to roll down this very steep hill and toward a giant tree at the bottom. I dropped my club and ran after the cart. I was at a full run when I realized I only had one shot at stopping this thing from crashing at the bottom of the hill. I jumped desperately into the cart as it was moving. One hand on the frame and a foot on the deck of the cart, but my spikes caused my foot to slip and I skidded so that I was laying on the deck of the cart hanging on to the frame and on hand reaching up for the wheel. The cart started to gain a dangerous amount of speed. I managed to pull myself up just in time to see the tree right in front of me. I slammed on the break and turned hard to the left ( in the best tradition of Hollywood car chases) causing the cart to slide sideways and stop just barley kissing the trunk of the tree. I was on the verge of soiling myself when I noticed that there were several groups who watched this whole thing who were now laughing there asses off at this display of golf cart dare deviltry.

I used to be a club thrower and one day in a temper I hurled my new driver over the fence in the general direction of my out of bounds tee shot. That was embarrassing but not as much as when my partner crawled through the fence and returned with the expensive buying a set of pin zing 2, I just can't afford to replace 'em so I don't throw 'em.

Most embarrasing was in one of the years majors at the club, after 3 holes i had 3 pars and two shits. I had these unbearable stomach pains after the 1st and 3rd holes, and just had to go, once into the bushes, another into a half built house. the only trouble was that golfers tend not carry toilet paper with them, so i had to maximise my resources....... fortunately i never throw away my old gloves. in fact the problem was so intense, that i missed 2 three foot birdie putts on account that while i was putting i had to squeeze my buttocks so tight in order not to completely embarrass myself. regards Mark Blake Never blame your golfing partner for his bad play, if he was a better golfer, HE would have found a better partner RSG Roll Call: http://u1.netgate.net/~kirby34/rsg/blakem.htm

First ever tournament I played in was a captain's choice for our local DARE program. It was also the first of many tournaments for this group, sothere was a lot of local publicity. I had gotten to know the irganizer, so he put me in his group which went off first so he could be back to post scores and other tasks. The local TV station turned out and needed some clips for the evening news. Since we were first and they had a deadline, we were their subjects. I had only been playing a little over a year and was the D player, so I had to hit first. Cameras rolling, I teed my ball, took a deep breath and proceeded to top the dang ball and dribble it about 12 yards from the box. After everyone else teed off, I took my second shot and smashed a 3 wood about a wedge from the green. Of course, by then the cameras were being packed up and put away. **sigh** Keith - Hide quoted text -- Show quoted text - I've asked for most birdies in a row and longest putt. Playing as a twosome with my wife and waved onto the par 3 by the foursome of guys ahead. 165 yds, no problem, and I proceed to top a five iron and leave it maybe 25yds from the tee. SHE then knocks her 5W stiff to about one foot. Boy, did I get the razz!

Well, having read through what's been posted so far, I believe I can "top" these Most Embarassing Moments - not once, but twice even!
I am a high-handicapper. After 6 or 7 years, I still average about 110, though I have managed to break 100 four times. Last year (and a good part of the previous year), however, my swing fell apart. (Yes, I know many of you might be thinking "what swing?", but even we hackers do tend to make some nice swings ONCE IN AWHILE!) I have had such a terrible time trying to make consistent contact w/ the ball. Last year, I took lessons from 4 separate pros, but left neither of them w/ any more confidence (or ball-striking ability). I won't drone on about my problems, as that is not the topic of this thread. I will merely offer that my main symptom is topping the ball - or worse <sh__king it. When I do make good contact, I'm capable of hitting some quality golf shots. It's just so seldom that I've given serious thought to quitting. Here are two prime examples. My employer sponsors a "league", which is run more like a traveling tournament, allowing us to play some rather nice private courses in Southern New England. Last year, on 2 separate outings, I managed to make myself wanna crawl into a divot and die! Moment #1: The first event of the year, first hole is a par 4 w/ the tee shot over a very small pond (20-30 yd. carry?). For all intents and purposes, this pond is not a factor. Even though I was in the last group, and hence, had no audience like the groups ahead of me, I was playing w/ 3 guys with whom I'd never played and I guess I was still nervous about the "first event, first hole" jitters. After taking my usual PGA-style practice swing (so it's been dubbed by my buds!), I proceeded to take my real swing - my savage outside-in, over-the-top, tempoless swipe! WHIFF!!! Arghhhh!!!! Amidst the murmurs of encouragement from my playing partners, I took another stab at it. This one walloped the ground nearly a FOOT behind the ball, before one-hopping into the topmost portion of the ball, hopelessly topping it into the "out-of-play" pond before me! Somebody SHOOT ME! I'm now hitting 4 while still on the tee! I finally manage to make contact, and pathetically pull-hook a low liner into the woods on the left, about 100 yards away. Of course, as embarassed as I was at that point, I was now thinking "these poor bastards who got stuck playing w/ ME today!" :-( Moment #2: At what is probably THE most exclusive club in the state (Brad Faxon and Billy Andrade hosted their PGA CVS Charity event there last year). Par 5, w/ the approach shot over water. I topped my tee-shot so badly that it DOVE into the ground about a foot or so in front of the tee then JUMPED backwards, coming to rest about a yard behind my tee!!! So now, I get to "tee off" again, but w/o the benefit of a tee! Imagine my embarassment walking back to my bag to exchange my driver for a fairway wood while still on the tee?! So... do I win the award for Most Embarassing Moments not staged in a Hollywood golf comedy movie? <:-0 Sandman

Thinking about it there is one recent howler that comes to mind. I was playing pretty well that day and came to the 12 tee. It's a par 5 and the previous green is about 45 degrees to the right, 50 yards away. I took out my 3 wood and tried to 'place' the ball down the middle. I hardly saw the shoot as it screamed over the previous green about three feet above the heads of the fourball on the green - absolutely no time to shout fore. I teed up again and you've guessed it the same thing happened. How I didn't kill somebody I'll never know. I just walked up the hole and a good round was ruined. It's about the only time I can remember playing that type of shot but to do it twice in a row. The guy's on the previous green must have thought that I was a lunatic. I also hate it when you are called through by the group in front and suddenly without warning you turn into a complete hacker. Tops, duffs, shanks, thins etc. You feel like hiding.

Mike, It was in a 1982 Club Team Championship (a foursome), #8 tee-box, 423yd Par 4. My honors, I teed the ball up, right-side tee box. Took a practice swing, addressed the ball, waggled into position, took a mighty swing – toed it! The ball hit the right-side tee marker, went straight up into the air about 150 to 200 feet, hovered over my head, and dropped back into the tee box! I was hitting two from 426yds away! And some folks pay Shrinks hundreds of dollars to get their head messed with – me, I just pay annual greens fees! Pete Altus, Oklahoma

Hitting (swinging) the driver underneath a teed ball so inaccurately as to cause the ball to hover about a foot in the air before falling to the ground about two feet in front of the tee box. There was evidently a lot of spin on the ball. It reminded me of those cartoon scenes where the character leaps in the air with legs churning and not going anywhere. Aarghhh!

My most embarrassing golf moment? Several years ago, I was invited to play at a local country club by a friend. I had never played there before and the members like to think that they are "exclusive", so I was trying to be on my best golfing behavior. The 10 hole is a par 5 that goes to the left of the pool area. I pushed my tee shot right and behind a metal building that is right behind the pool (which was full of people at the time). The smart play from there was to pitch back to the middle of the fairway. Not me! I can save this with a shot over the building! I promptly thinned a 3 wood right into the side of the metal shed. It sounded like a cannon going off! People were running from the pool to see what had happened. My friend tried to hide in the cart. I still had to pitch out. It was years before I was invited back there again. Not sure why… Mark May
