Question:
Will be in LA the week of 2/21/00, and looking to get in a round or two. What are your recommendations (staying in 90210). mt
Response:
First thing you need to know about LA golf is if you don’t have a tee time on the weekend you are pretty much S.O.L. unless you are a single. Second be ready for a six hour round. Right down the street from Beverly Hills is Rancho Park. 10460 W. Pico 323-838-7373(area code might be 213) Pretty tight course but very fair. Former sight of the LA Open. This is the best value in LA and you will likely see some movie stars. I played there a few years ago and we saw OJ in a foursome with Kirk Douglas, pretty cool. A little more expensive but well worth it is Malibu CC. 901 Encinal Canyon, Malibu 818-889-6680 Well groomed and not played as much as Rancho. It is set in the Santa Monica mountains and there is lots of water. These are both pretty close to where you will be.Good luck. Matt

A couple of new entrants…. Cascades Golf Club just opened about 1/2 hour north of LA where the 405 and 5 meet. Cupp/Timm design, from what I hear ,good, about $80… About 1 hour away in Moorpark is Tierra Rejada Golf Club, which opened in December. Tough, spectacular views, hilly… Frank

Let me guide you to some great golfing spots in LA. I’ll break it down into a few categories since you were unspecific in your request. All of these courses have green fees that are reasonable and typical of municipal courses, unless otherwise noted. If location is your preference (90210 zip) I would recommend the Rancho Park golf course (310) 838-7373 but keep in mind two things. One, the course is being redesigned and you will be playing 16 temporary greens. Two, it is still a crowded course and you may not get a tee time. Still within the city is the ever popular Griffith Park golf course (213) 663-2555, the old stomping ground for countless classic movie stars of yesteryear. There are two courses and both are always crowded. Get used to that expression since golf in LA caters to thousands each day. Its a challenging course and lots-o-fun. Wait times are typically 30 mins-1 1/2 hours. Knollwood takes reservations (without needing a ‘city reserv. card’) and its a wonderful gem. (818) 363-8161. In Burbank there is a nice course situated high upon the hills. De Bell (818) 845-5052 is another place you can call up for reservations quite easily. This course demands shot selections and you should bring plenty of balls. Northwest of the city is a remarkable golf course called Elkins Ranch (only an hour from 90210 zip). This course is nestled among acres of orange groves and has elevation changes throughout. I recommend this course above all others around the city. Dress code requires collared shirt. (805)524-1440. On the south side of LA and possessing sweeping views of the Pacific is the ever popular Los Verdes golf course (310) 377-7370. This place is croweded but it is possible to get on. The views are worth the wait. Malibu country club is open to the public and you’d never know it. Quiet, peaceful and nestled among the malibu hills. The only drawback is the price, although its still under $100. (818) 889-6680. Beautiful course. Okay, that should give you a jump on things. Email if you have more questions. -mike

Hello Mike, Thanks for the helpful info below. Though someone else asked it, it’ll surely be handy for me now, since my parents will reside there for most of the winter months to escape the misery here, eh?
But I was wondering if you’d be so kind as to indicate the green fees for the courses below and also whether walking is allowed or not? TIA. Steve

The guy allready gave you more info than any one person should give and now you want them to post the prices and whether walking is allowed or not? You have do do some of the leg work…..maybe you want directions also——perhaps he can gas your car before you leave or get you flight times and even wake at 5 am to get your sorry ass a tee time at Los Verdes, maybe you will need yardages, jeez…….he gave you the courses…..go call em!
