Las Vegas Golf

Question:

We’ll be in Vegas in November and want to play golf on November 15. We need a good course that doesn’t cost more than $50/person (people I’m with are cheap). We prefer something close to the strip. We played Angel Park (very nice) last year in the middle of summer, but it was only $50; in November it would be $95. How about Desert Inn, Craig Ranch, or Los Parados??? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Desert Inn –  $195      (One of the most expensive in town). Craig Ranch  - $25  (not worth $5, absolutely horrid shape, greens are like so bumpy like an asphalt                street, and no sand bunkers –  they can’t afford the upkeep. Plus most people            playing there are +30 handicap and/or drunk and hung over from the night before.                 This course is a definite "Stay Away"). Los Prados  - $40       (Just an execute course). Bottom line is, Winter time in Las Vegas is expensive to play.  If you can’t pay about $100 per round at this time of the year, then you are better off not playing here at all. Most courses that are less than $75 bucks are really not that nice and you’ll be playing with a bunch of yahoos.  So, pay about $100 at a quality course like Angel Park, or just play at home. Sorry for the bad news, Dave

- Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Hi Mark, Welcome to Lost Wages (AKA for Las Vegas) Hope this will help. 1. As a single you should be able to walk on pretty easy.  However, Saturday and Sunday Mornings will certainly be busy. 2. See if the hotel has any deals. Usually there are no discounts from the hotels but you never know so ask. 3. You should try Angel Park. It has two Par 72 courses ( The Palm Course and The Mountain Course).  The Mountain Course (slope 128 and Par 72.4) is a favorite of mine. Green fee’s are not to bad at $55 Monday through Thursday, and $65 during the weekends.  Fees are with cart. They also have an executive 9-hole course, driving range, and 18 hole real green putting course that is lite at night and is open until midnight.   I would also recommend Highland Falls at Sun City (slope 126 and Par 71.2).  $55 before Noon and $35 after noon. Its typically 5 to 10 degree’s cooler up at Highland Falls than at the Strip because the course is bout 800 feet high in elevation. Also try The Badlands if you want a reeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaallllllllllyyyyyyyy hard course (slope 133 and Par 73.0).  Fees are $58 M-Th,  $65 on weekends, and $38 after 3:00pm.  They give you a sleeve of balls when you play, but the funny thing you’ll need at least a 15-Pack. This is a real Desert Target course. The fees at Desert Inn $195 (slope 124 and Par 73.9)  After 11:30 it a real bargain at $175 (NOT!!!) This is probably the highest fee’s in town. However, if you stay at the Desert Inn, they give you special rate (which I don’t know, sorry).  In all fairness, this course is rated as one of the top 100 resort course every year. Unfortunately, Spanish Trail is a private course and thus you can’t play without an invite from a member. Hope this helps and Have a great time.  Oh yea, puts some money in the slots while your here, we need some more schools!!! Dave Our plans have been finalized and we are going to Las Vegas in early Aug for a few days. Just came back from a Vegas wedding(not mine). Had an opportunity to play The Badlands. What an awesome course! Well worth the $70. Target golf at its finest, had the driver out only 4 times. Thank goodness for the satellite hook-up, yes there are displays on each cart that help you determine your next attempt at finding green grass.<G It was a hot and windy day, but enjoyable none the less.  We saw two foxes, a rattler and few other critters…no, they were not near the fairway! I left my free sleeve of balls somewhere among the cacti along with about 3 more of my own. Also played the Desert Rose….it came up stinking! Very poor conditions. The back nine was in better shape than the front, but still not worth playing. Cost was $37 only because I said I was a resident.(not) $65 for non-residents, that would be thievery! Terry —-

If you’re in Las Vegas and want to golf, I highly recommend that you take the drive out to Mesquite, NV. It’s about 77 miles, up I-15 north. They have two courses, the Palms (My favorite course) summer rates are $35 and the Oasis, this is an Arnold Palmer course you have to see to beleive, lots of desert, hills, and water. A good tee shot is a premium. The summer rates for the Oasis is $49. The courses are owned by the Oasis Hotel and Casino. They have room/golf packages that are also a good deal. When I’ve played there the course wasn’t crowded and nobody was in front of us. We played 36 holes in under 8 hours. I just got back last week. Played Revere at Anthem, Rio Secco, and LV Paiute. Rio Secco is $200 for guests of the Rio. Expensive but it’s quite a course. I like the Rio because it has extra large rooms (which they call "suites") which gives you alot of space for your clobs and luggage. They have a decent package rate. http://www.playrio.com The Lakes course at Primm is also a great experience. They also have a Desert course. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I am considering a golf vacation in Las Vegas sometime in March, and was wondering if anyone could suggest some courses and/or hotels.  Thanks. Primm Valley Resort.  Though it’s many miles outside of town, the traffic on I-15 makes the commute there shorter (and more pleasant) than some of the in-town courses.  I played The Lakes course in a foursome with handicaps ranging from 5 to 25, and all four thoroughly enjoyed the round. I’ve stayed at Caesar’s and would recommend it.  They treat you well. – Joe I am considering a golf vacation in Las Vegas sometime in March, and was wondering if anyone could suggest some courses and/or hotels.  Thanks. Thanks… Vegas has some of the greatest golf courses I have played.  Stallion Mountain was great, Legacy was a bitch of a course, Hilton CC was fabulous.  However, none of these are in your price range. LV does have a couple of good muni courses.  Now remember that a municiple course in LV is usually better than a semi-private in other places, so you may want to check them out. My suggestion is to shoot the load and look at the Desert Inn course or Summerlin course.  There are very few sports where you can play with the same equipment or on the same field as professionals.  Play a course that is on one of the tours (in DI’s case the LPGA, in Summerlin or LV Hilton CC the PGA).  Take the $100 ($50×2), put it on black at the roulette table and you have a 50-50 shot of playing a goot course.

I would appreciate any help in identifying fun and affordable golf in Las Vegas.  Everyone I talk to has a vested interest in the courses that I pick. Thanks!

Response:

I’ve played golf in Vegas several times, namely at Spanish Trails Country Club and the new TPC course, both beautiful tracks and well worth the effort of getting on .  The Hilton course is an grand old course, but the conditions last December were less than pristine, and they wanted top dollar for the pleasure of playing there. You might try Angel Park, I haven’t personally played there but friends tell me its really a nice course and open to the public. I played both the Oasis and the Palms courses in Mesquite and really liked the new Oasis course.  It has some maturing to do, but plays great for all golfers.  You tee off from several elevated tees down through canyons, and is quite spectacular.  There are several sets of tees for all levels of golfers. Anyway, enjoy, I’m sure you will. Larry

Response:

First thing you do is get the yellow pages for LV. I can’t remember the name but under the golf section is an outfit that can get discounted tee times at various courses. You call them and they arrange everything for you. I saved about a third of the price on green fees compared to booking them myself. I would recommend The Badlands, Painted Desert, TPC Canyons.

Check out www.golflv.com for the best data on the local golf courses. For Green fees : http://www.golfvegas.com/#anchor531208 As far as cost is concerned, there are NO courses worth playing here that are under $100 for out-of-state visitors.  All courses (with the exception of Craig Ranch, Las Vegas Golf Club and Desert Rose) are generally $110-$170 per round.  The three courses I mentioned that are about $50-60 for out-of-state visitors and are really bad muni-courses.  The courses are boring and in pretty bad shape. I you can spend $100-$175 per round, the Vegas can offer some good courses. However, if you really don’t want to spent that kind of money, then I would suggest that you don’t play while you are here. Here are some suggestions: Primm is one of the best in the area. Awesome! Both the Lakes and Desert Courses are magnificent Tom Fazio designs.  A good hour drive south of town. Also check out: Pauite – both courses – about 20-30 min.s northwest of town. Excellent desert courses. Sun City Summerlin – Palm Valley and Highland Falls. The two best kept secretes in town. If you don’t mind paying the price, there are great! Also consider: Reflection Bay at Lake Las Vegas (Nicklaus design) Awesome course. $175 green fees! Water comes into play on 16 holes. Rio Secco Was formerly known as Seven Hills until Rio Hotel and Casino purchased course. Great Course but WAY WAY WAY overpriced at $300 a round. Rhodes Ranch Ok course. Nothing spectacular Course was in awful shape this summer and had some problem with grass disease.  It is suppose to be in better shape now. TPC Canyons $175 a round and also way over priced. Badlands Probably the toughest course in town and a "True" target course, not many holes you want to hit driver! $125 and some of the views are great. Las Vegas National Very good course with very small greens and very undulating Tough course and it used to host the PGA tour event Las Vegas Invitational. Here are some courses to ABSOLUTELY stay away from.  Total rip-offs and are positioned to just rip off tourists. Desert Pines -This course is crammed on 90 acres and is very dangerous – you’ll need a helmet to play here as the fairways are very narrow and other will being hitting right into you.  Also $125 is about double what the course it worth. It is located in one of the worst areas of town so down leave anything in your car.  I would never play here, even if it was free!!! Stallion Mountain- It was a private course, now it is public with some remaining members.  The North and South courses are no more than muni courses with a very high price.  The West course is nice but expect 6+ hour rounds.  The members have been ripped off so they are not very friendly. The current owner purchased the club three years ago and doubled the monthly dues to force out all the members.  It is not a very good scene. My top three choices for playing golf here are: 1. Primm – Lakes Course (but its an hour drive south of town). 2. Sun City – both Highland Falls and Palms are great. 3. Pauite – Best desert courses around. — Dave http://www.lj.net/~daveb "If a man stands in the middle of the forest speaking and there is no woman around to hear him,  Is he still wrong?"  Jack Handy

IME, Vegas golf is some of the most expensive golf there is. At the same time, many of their courses are in Golf Digest’s "Top 100 You Can Play". I don’t think anything within 30 minutes of Vegas is under $50, even twilight. Personally, I would bite the bullet and pay to play at TPC or some of the courses in Primm. Good luck.

Response:

Most courses are affiliated with certain hotels, so if you stay at the hotel (and thus maybe gamble there) the hotel will give you "reasonable" green fees. Which is why I read about 55-125 USD pricing. Jeff

Actually, you only save yourself about 10 dollars by booking through the hotel. I booked myself to play Royal Links (run by Walters Golf) by calling them directly. The operator told me that if you don’t book through the hotel, they charge a "direct-book" fee of $10 – she said it was standard for most courses. The hotel may very well give you a better rate IF you are one of their high-rollers and they count that as part of your comps, but otherwise, a green fee is a green fee.

Response:

This is just my opinion, but if you’re not willing to shell out $100 to play the good courses in LV, don’t bother playing. It won’t be worth the time/hassle/money. Why go all the way to LV and play mediocre courses just to save money? You’re better off paying $100 and enjoying the course than paying $50 and wishing you hadn’t. The one exception is the Sunrise Vista course at Nellis AFB if you can get on. I would like to take a group to Las Vegas to golf for a few days. I would not like to pay $100+ green fees. Try Rhodes Ranch. A very nice course about 20 minutes south west of the strip. I played there in May, the afternoon rate was $70. It is a nice course for any handicap as it has 4 or 5 sets of tee’s. The green fee’s this time of year should be even less.    Have fun  Tim

In rec.sport.golf I played Stallion Mountain (Man ‘0 War) in April (91 Vegas Invitational, Chip Beck 59).  Anyway, not a bad price but not much of a course. $50 cab ride from Balley’s there and back.

Either you’ve played some fucking awesome courses or you’re being a complete jackass.  I thought Stallion Mountain was one of the best courses I’ve ever played, second only to Walking Stick in Pueblo, CO.  For the money, in Vegas, you can’t beat it and the service was total country club. They even made my son and I free personalized bag tags.  We got free range balls, clubs and shoes cleaned and carried.  WTF do you want for $50?

thanks to everyone for their input…i’ve got a lot to choose from now. "fore!" jk

Check this out in a couple of days: http://www.stores.ebay.com/ezlinkscomteetimes/plistings/list/all/dept… David Jacubowski (RSG from Iowa) played Anthem a few months ago. I liked it and Dave probably did too since he shot a 71 on the par 72. If you’d like to pay my green fee, I’ll pick you up at your hotel and drop you off. And buy lunch.  Do you have a foursome on the 6th because I can get you a better rate if you’d like to let me play, as a guest of a resident. At least I think the rate is lower. I can afford the green fees there. : -)

I looked at the page again and it’s for 4 golfers at about $120, now. If I can dig up a couple of friends I’ll post it. That I could handle too. What days are you going to be here?

Las Vegas Golf Club should be in pretty good shape. The city championship is being played there pretty soon and they usually get it in good shape.

Actually, Rhodes Ranch was the other course I played.  I much preferred Paiute, and it was only $10 more. The courses have completely different feels; Rhodes Ranch is in a golf community (housing surrounds the course).  Paiute is about 30 minutes north of Vegas; truly desert golf. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Try Rhodes Ranch. I heard an ad for $50 rooms at the Stardust. They’re sold out because of an auto convention. I’m sure you’ve got you’re reservations, but just in case watch out for the convention.
