Question:
I’m going to be attending some training in Calabasas, California the first week in June. Can anyone tell me some nice courses to play when I arrive? I normally shoot between 70-75 on a good day and right around 80 on a bad day. I’d like to play some nice scenic courses and since I’ve never been to California before I have no idea what’s nice and what isn’t. Thanks… JJ

Hi Jack! Saw your note on the NG. My husband and I live pretty close to Calabasas – nice area! The Sherwood Country Club (where Greg Norman hosts the Shark Shootout) is not far from Calabasas and, aside from Kaanapali, is one of the most beautiful courses I’ve ever seen – but don’t plan on playing there – we’ve heard membership at this private country club is $50,000! Depending on whether you have transportation or not (I assume you do) you might want to look at Camarillo Springs Golf Course – it’s a public course (beautiful) about 15 minutes west of Calabasas or Los Robles in Thousand Oaks- even closer. East of Calabasas (and a little bit further) is Griffith Park – they have 2 or 3 courses there and they’re in a great area of L.A.. Let me know if you need more specifics… Jessica Nicholas Personal Homepage: http://pages.prodigy.com/Nicholas

Sherwood CC is not $50,000 to join, more like $250,000! Frank PS: I a member at nearby Wood Ranch and heard a story about how one of our members played a round up there in a foursome, with lunch, caddies, etc, nothing out of the ordinary, and got a bill for $2300!

I assume you don’t want to spend your life on the freeway so I won’t do Pelican Hills or Industry Hills. I would do Sandpiper (Santa Barbara) (805)968-1541 & La Purisima (805)735-8395 These are the course used in the most recent PGA Tour Qualifying tournament. In the same direction there is Ojai Valley (805)646-5511. Senior tours plays there. Good luck. Chuck B.

Ken, you give me a memory of playing Sandpiper some 7-8 years ago when I’d only been playing a year or so. As I recall, there’s a hole at Sandpiper similar to the 8th at PB, a gorge carry of 175 or so yds. Made it !! just about 10 feet off the pin and was so damn delighted.
Response:
That is a par 5 on the back 9. Seems like it’s 14 or 15. The forced carry is with the fairway on the left, the ocean on the right and the green looming like a peninsula. Indeed similar to PB#8. There was a national commercial (Top-Filte, I think) filmed using that very shot. I may be doing some business in Santa Barbara in the near future. I’m looking forward to once again playing Sandpiper, Ojai and LaPurisima.
