Question:
I am going to Phoenix on the 26th and I have narrowed my search for great golf courses down to just a few. Per Golf Digest, Troon in Scottsdale is a "5 star course" but I would like to get some feedback from anyone who has played there before I dish out $150 to play. Thanks. Matt
Great course, we played Troon North about 4 years ago and loved it. I understand from friends that the new one is equally as good. Larry
Response:
Oh, come now. Troon North is a commercial "golfer processing center." A very classy one but an air of "enjoy yourself but please leave as much money behind as possible" pervades that place. And the course itself … nice, but you can find other courses with much better shot values. My current favorite in the "tough but fair" category is Las Sendas. The Grayhawk courses are very nice also. "No better public course?" Really? -joseph – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Troon North and Camelback should never be mentioned in the same sentence, unless the sentence is: Troon North is awesome and Camelback sucks. No doubt, the staff at TN is stuffy. There are many other courses where players are treated better, but IMHO, there is no better public course.
Response:
The Monument course at Troon North is great, I played there a few months ago, but in my opinion Grayhawk is a better course, Ive played Talon there, but not the Raptor.

Matt Camelback in Scottsdale in also pretty good. Not a desert course but "Never been treated better…" Lou
Response:
You mean Troon North, not Troon, right? Troon Country Club is oh so private. Anyway, it’s very pretty. Pinnacle is a penal target course that will not be to the liking of low ball hitters. Monument, I haven’t played, but it’s said to be somewhat more forgiving. In the summer they’re $75, afternoon at least. -joseph – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I am going to Phoenix on the 26th and I have narrowed my search for great golf courses down to just a few. If you are playing there anytime soon it is going to be HOT!!! I played a few courses while I was there on vacation a few weeks ago and the heat really got to me. I think the greens fees have switched to summer rates (much cheaper.) If you can’t stand the heat it is about a 2 hour drive directly north to Flagstaff which has some pretty nice courses and the temp is much cooler. -Alex – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I am going to Phoenix on the 26th and I have narrowed my search for great golf courses down to just a few.
