Ball retriever

Question:

If it WAS counted as a club, it would also be an ILLEGAL club – as it does not conform to the Rules (telescoping shaft – for starters)! What other rules has your friend invented? – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – So many of us carry a ball retriever in our bags. Yesterday a friend told me that in tournaments, a ball retriever is counted one of your 14 allowable clubs.  I quickly scanned the rule book and found nothing about ball retrievers. Does anyone know about  this?? Barry — Barry or Linda Browner

"R&B" wrote.. You know you’ve had a bad year when you realize it’s time to re-grip your ball retriever.

Matt ‘Jag’ Aamold wrote Oh yeah, I forgot to leave that ball retriever that I found at the country club with the cart boys.

Wow.  I’d forgotten about that.  I guess I should add that you know you’ve had a bad year when you not only lose golf balls, but you lose your ball retriever, too. Randy

Barry M. Your question sent me to the Rule Book.   Rule 4-1 starts out as follows, "A club is an implement designed to be used for striking the ball."  Since the ball retrievers I’m familiar with are not designed for striking the ball, I would guess they are not clubs and therefore would not be counted against your 14 club limit, but I would like to see a Decision on this.  I’ve never counted a ball retriever as a club in coming to my limit or the limit of anybody I’m playing with or against.  Hope this helps.                                                 Bill

Since posting this question this morning, I checked my rule book (quickly) and found no references at all about ball retrievers. At the club later this am, I asked one of the assistant pros.  He said he’d have to look that one up.  Shortly in came the head pro.  I asked him and he gave me a quick "no… it’s not counted as a club."  He’d been asked that before and didn’t even have to think about it… a no-brainer So… that’s about it for that subject… I guess. — Barry or Linda Browner
