Question:
Just trying to find out some opinions on the greatest irons of all time. My top 5: 1. Hogan Precision 2. Mizuno MP 29 3. Titleist Tour Model mid 1980’s model 4. Sounder SBIV – the kind Seve used to use 5. Wilson Staff – FG 17 What do you all think? mm
Response:
I can attest to #3 in your list being a great set of irons. I got a set around 1983-84 and used them for 10 years. I had to cut back my playing so my then-girlfriend (now my wife) got me a set of TA 845s which I’ve used ever since. I still take the Titleists to the range every now and then to see how I’m swinging. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Just trying to find out some opinions on the greatest irons of all time. Response:
The best *selling* irons of all time were the Ping Eye 2s. That is, until the Callaway Big Berthas came along. And then the X-12s. All of which are excellent clubs. Ping pretty much redefined modern clubmaking. Their Eye 2 clubs are still in alot of bags on every TOUR in the world (a wedge or two, or a 1 iron, if not the whole set). Response:
the best set, in my opinion, is the lynx parallax set. clean, relatively forgiving. if you can find a tour set, with the less offset, consider yourself a lucky dude.
Response:
Ping ISI, oversize, stiff steel shaft

Several people have mentioned the Eye-2’s, but I have never hit them, so I couldn’t say. Hi, Dan: 845’s, Roger that!…Along with Ping Eye-2’s. -Larry

I also think the Eye 2’s need to be on the list. I’ve done a lot of stupid things, and one that ranks up near the top was when I decided my Eye 2’s (non conforming groves, no less) needed to be reshafted. I got tired of the aches and pains I was feeling after playing and convinced myself the solution was to go to graphite shafts. Never mind the fact that Ping recommends against reshafting steel shafted clubs with graphite shafts, I had it done anyway at great expense. Ruined a damn good set of clubs. Response:
Hi, Kenny: What about reshafting them back to steel? You might not be able to get the True Temper, ZZ lite shafts that Ping used, but I bet that Dynamic Gold would work great. You’d just have to decide whether you want stiff or regular flex shafts. -Larry – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -I also think the Eye 2’s need to be on the list. How could there be a "best" set of irons? What one person likes and hits good, another may hate……IMHO… P.S…..mizuno MP 29’s….yuck! LYNX parallax are sweet clubs… P.S.S…..IMO..my clevland 792 VAS are the best clubs i have ever played. and i have played with MANY clubs in the past(i used to work at a golf shop)but i bet not many of you will agree with me…i am a 6 handicap, so i can kinda tell if a club is working long and straight…. jack
Response:
Larry, That’s kinda been my plan, but I haven’t done anything about it. I read with great interest some of the postings here from people who assemble their own clubs, but this is something I’ve never tried to do myself. I figure that one day (when I have more spare time than I do now), I’ll tyr to reshaft them myself for the learning experience as much as anything else. Or you could have them reshafted with Ping’s Cushin steel shafts, which I think feel pretty good (better than Sensicore, IMO). I think Ping charges about $30 per club for reshafting. — Eric Nadler Alcatel USA Richardson, Tx – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Hi, Kenny: What about reshafting them back to steel? Hi, Kenny: Yeah, I’ve been toying with the idea of learning clubmaking myself. If nothing else, I’d like to be able to re-grip my clubs. I don’t know if there is a Golfsmith "Superstore" near you yet? They just opened one about two miles from me. Anyway, they give clubmaking classes on weekends and they always have a clubmaker there for advice. -Larry – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -Larry, That’s kinda been my plan, but I haven’t done anything about it. For those of you who are not aware, no matter which irons you decide on or use, please get them properly fitted to your swing, length and stance so that you’re not wasting your money and/or strokes. My choice for best irons ever made are the 1999 Wilson Fat Shaft forged irons with sensicor shafts.
Response:
Best set of irons ever made were the Wilson Staffs of the mid 70s. I still own 2 sets. Obviously this was before perimeter weighting, but man could you work the ball off of those clubs..
Response:
I liked the hogan pc’s, but now I have to go with mp-14’s. John
