Question:
Lately I have seen a certain shaft a lot while watching professional and was wondering if anyone could identify it for me. It is purple near the grip, this goes about 2-3 inches below the grip and then goes to a bright yellow shaft, looks damn ugly but I have seen them around a bit and want to know what it is. Brendan, This could possibly be the ProForce 65 or ProForce 75 by United Shaft Technologies. They are Ultralight graphite shafts that have stiff tips and low torque with a high bend point designed primarily for stronger players. I think last year was the first full year it was available. I know Jose Maria Olazabal had one in his Bridgestone driver when he won the Masters, and Jim Furyk had one in his Callaway driver when he won the Las Vegas Invitational. Seemed to be a fairly popular shaft. Although the color scheme seems to elicit those "you either love it or hate it" responses. Any component supplier should have them. I’ve found them in the $30 per shaft range, give or take a couple of bucks. Thanks guys, it is the proforce. I don’t know if it is really that common but the color scheme sure makes it stand out. It’s a UST Pro-Force 65 or 75. Damn good shaft. I use one in my driver … about the only thing my golf game has in common with Duval’s, Olazabal’s and Brett Rumford’s.

They are Proforce 65 Gold or Proforce 75 Gold Tip Stiff shafts by UST. Read all about them at:- http://www.ustgolfshaft.com/ I am currently fiddling about with a Proforce 75 (regular) in a Henri Griffits Titanium head (203 gms)…have adjusted it by length trimming to swingweight at slightly less than D5 (45 1/4")……but I feel this arrangement is just too soft. I have a Proforce 65 (stiff) on order…I expect to fit that to a GBB (189 gms) and swingweight that at slightly less than D3…I expect that to give much more feel and it will probably match my swing speed more evenly. (for interest, although these shafts are priced in the US$25 region…in Oz they are Aus$85 each…approx US$55) david

Brett Rumford was the latest one I had noticed, although I saw a few at the Vic Open. Would people recommend this shaft for a BB. If not what shaft would you recommend as I am starting to feel that I need a replacement (no Randy it isn’t because Callaway offer an inferior shaft), my swing has improved and I now feel the shaft needs to be stiffer. Can’t see why not. What does Rumford use? … looked like a Titleist with a Pro-Force shaft to me. Cheers Colin Wilson RSG Roll Call – http://u1.netgate.net/~kirby34/rsg/wilsonc.htm Visit one of Australia’s best club web sites: Trentham Golf Club – http://publishing.kyneton.net.au/trentham

i use one (PF65) in my gbb and am happy with the results at 45". i put in the "S" flex and tipped it to flex so that it came out on the frequency meter at about an X at D0. it actually plays a little softer than measured as it’s so light. good combination in my opinion. if you are thinking of putting one into one of the older stainless bb’s i’d be more tempted to go for the PF75 rather than the 65. fwiw i ordered mine through serpell in vic and mail order it was i think $70(+22%tax), so all up about $80some. not too bad in comparison to the prolites or the EI70’s. brett

I would strongly recommend it for a GBB, but I don’t know about a BB. Whether Randy likes it or not, the ProForce65 is very greatly superior to the stock shaft in the GBB, regardless of flex. (The flex in my stiff proforce65 was measured as exactly the same as the stock shaft of my GBB) Rob – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Brett Rumford was the latest one I had noticed, although I saw a few at the Vic Open. Yeah it is for a Warbird, the original, a few questions here as I am learning about shaft technology Why the 75? I like the feel of the club at the moment as far as weight/swingweight goes. Would this be retained if I got the shaft changed? I am thinking of getting a similar 3 wood, if this shaft is good in the driver would it be good in the 3? If I get a store to do this can I get the original shaft back in case I decide to change back? brett I’m curious as to what you define as ‘X’ on the frequency meter for this shaft…..and how much you needed to ‘tip trim’ the ‘S’ flex to achieve this. ….also…according to the charts on the UST website your GBB head (191 gms….I just double checked mine!) at 45" extrapolates to approx. C5 swingweight assuming a 51 gm grip. I’m not sure how they measure their club length either…so this could account for some difference here. david

because the warbirds came stock with a 44" shaft in them. if you cut the PF65 to 44" in one of them it will probably swingweight at low C’s somewhere i’d guess. the PF75 is probably closer in spec to the original shaft. maybe a few grams lighter but nothing a little lead tape on the head wont fix. maybe not identically but i think the original rch90/96 shafts were high 70’s so even if the PF75 is a little lighter you can retain the deadweight/swingweight but adding some weight to it somewhere. getting them both spot on is hard but to do either or is fairly trivial. fwiw it might turn out that it feels good good without any modification. I am thinking of getting a similar 3 wood, if this shaft is good in the driver would it be good in the 3?
yes they are a great shaft for fairway woods. actually my pro has just put one into the strong 3 warbird. i’ve hit maybe a dozen balls with it and its very nice. though i’m pretty much set on my t-zoid to bother about chasing one up for myself. If I get a store to do this can I get the original shaft back in case I decide to change back?
just ask the shop doing it for you. there is no reason they wouldn’t. brett

Thanks, I’ll have to do some more research as to what shaft to get. I’ll probably make a report to RSG once I get it done.
