RECOMMENDATION GOOD GOLF VIDEO

Question:

Does anybody have a recommendation on a good golf video or even better on t h e  best golf video available?! It should cover basically all different types of strokes, especially the basic swing fundamentals. Is Jack Nicklaus’ "Golf my way" the best or is there anything better? Thanks, Dietmar

I suspended my playing at age 17 when I became a starving student with about a 22 handicap. I started playing again once or twice a week at age 24.  The way I got myself into it was with Greg Normans "The Long Game" and his "The Short Game". It brought me down to about an 11 handicap by the end of that summer.  Each spring (live in Saskatchewan) I rent them to review prior to hitting the range and the course. I play to an index of between 8 and 9 with once a week golf and I credit those 2 videos. I’ve seen Nicklaus’ video as well as others and I dont like them. Cheers, Colin.

Dietmar, I’ve seen "Golf my Way," but find Leadbetter and Nick Price’s video "Faults and Fixes" much more fun to watch.  Lots of tips.  I like the format because the two guys summarize at the end of each lesson about the important things to remember.  Have fun.       I like "Golf My Way" part two..it covers preperation, warm ups, course management and strategy… For swing instruction, Leadbetter’s tapes ( Full Swing, Short Game, Taking it to the Course, Faults and Fixes (( with Nick Price)) and two Nick Faldo instruction tapes, with Leadbetter ) are good.       My favorite tapes are the two Harvey Penick tapes with Crenshaw and Kite.

My favorite video (set of 2, actually) is a set of 18 restored "shorts" filmed in the 1930s for cinema use.  They were lost for several years, and when they were found, the Jones estate had the Callaway company issue a commemorative video set, including a book (not "Down the Fairway", but I forget which one right now).  The film was extensively repaired and enhanced.  BTW, Eli Callaway is related to RTJ, hence the traditional connection between the company and Bobby’s name. If you can get past the inane little stories that accompany the actual golf instruction, the golf stuff is great.  Some of the language is not current (e.g. "…strike the ball fairly in the back…"), but Jones displays a real talent for instruction, and I love his tempo.  Great swing, loop at the top and all! These are my favorite videos regardless of subject. Regards, Mark

I like the series of videos by David Leadbetter, I think there called ‘The Swing’, ‘The Short Game’ and ‘Taking it to the course’, and are published by Telstar. As there are three videos in the range, each manages to cover its topic area with a degree of detail. The Jack Nicklaus Videos are OK, but are similar to the majority of instructional golf videos on the market. Richard Robinson

Dietmar, I’ve seen a few, not a lot, of videos and most of them put me to sleep. Among the more interesting are David Leadbetter’s, but for my money, the best so far is Jimmy Ballard’s. I’d recommend reading his book first, though ("How to Perfect Your Golf Swing" ISBN 0-671-72310-3). I must admit I fell asleep the first time I watched it, but I think that was because he was throwing out too much too quickly and I was responding with student or museum mind and fell asleep in self defense. In subsequent watchings I find myself going back to pick up nuances and to make sure I got it. The bottom line is that what he teaches works like a charm. It’s overly expensive at $50.00 US plus shipping but I’m satisfied to the point of planning to take a workshop with him. He can be contacted at 800-999-6664 or at 100 Anchor Drive #406, Key Largo FL 33037.  Good luck. Ron
