Pushy salesman

Question:

When I stated I wanted blades the bloke in one shop argued with me and told me I did not want blades I wanted offset. Bering in mind he had not seen me swing a club. It got so bad at one point he asked me if I new what a blade was….I told him I had no idea what blade was, but it sounded pretty cool so I thought I was buy some. He got upset then.

Your joking right? By the way I did end up getting the Ping blades I wanted, and surprisingly enough it will only take 1 week to fit and send them now not the 10 weeks I was bullshitted.

(pending the above answer) The pings aren’t real blades

Response:

I have been out shopping for new iron this week and this was supposed to be a exciting nice time for me. However it turned out o be a nightmare. There are so many sneaky salesman in the golf world today it’s not funny. To cut a week long story short I have met them all this week, and some of the bullshit they talk is amazing. They will go to any lengths to sell you the clubs THEY want not the ones you want. For example I was in the market for the new Titliest irons or the Ping 3I, I was shopping for price.

Most of the top end brands are not stocked by dealers who want to stock them but because they have to stock them – i.e. consumer demand. The margin they make on these brands is not as much as they can make on the ‘knock offs’, some lesser known brands distributor offer very good sales incentives to the dealer, so it is in their interest to push these brands. Also some floor salesman are on bonus/sales incentives linked by brands. For instance – (not a known fact) – get say 2% commission on Ping or Calloway, but say 10% commission on those knock offs…easy to see which one they will push. Better to shop online for price and then when you have narrowed it down do it in person… David

offs… Hum……well you’re kind of close. With six years in the business I can tell the you the actual numbers that the fifty or sixty sales people that I’ve worked with or have know are making in commission on the following brands. Callaway-0% Titleist-0% Ping-0% Taylor Made-0% Nike-0% Hogan-0% Adams-0% Orlimar-0% Need I go on? On the non-proline box sets.  Well, every once in awhile you can make a little spiff but, nothing to get a hard on over.  "Gee whiz I just sold a 3/8 starter set and made five buck".  "I think I’ll buy that summer home in Maui that I’ve been dreaming about." -ss pushy salesman and damn proud of it. Well you could have go on but as I have nearly 25 years in the business I can safely say you are wrong…I never said it was a common practice, but it is done…and I know that virtually every sales brand offers sales incentives/bonuses/rebates (call them what you will) to almost every major retail reseller around…and some retailers offer their staff incentives on certain brands. well, the salespeople you described DO sound like a nitemare…however, it also sounds like you might have contributed to some of the problem. No knowing anything about clubs but insisting on blades is like not ever being on a bicycle and demanding to buy a unicycle. No salesman should tell you what to buy…you should try/demo some and decide what feels best to you. What shocks me the most is some AUTHORIZED Ping dealer agreed to get you Ping Blades without giving you a dynamic fitting. This salesperson was just as bad, if not worse than the others…he wasn’t trying to help you…he just allowed you to buy an incorrect set of clubs.

Response:

I was fitted for the clubs after all of the sales bullshit. This was after he had tried to sell me everything else in the shop but the pings. As for the blades you mentioned that would not suit me, its funny because I did test my friends set and I must say I have never hit the ball better in my life. Hence wanting my own set. I have no handicap as I have only been playing for 10 months, however I would say it would be around the 16 mark. You must also take into consideration that this is with a set of Brosnan Broomsticks that are 2 inches too short for me, I am 6 2". Lots of people say bladed clubs are for low handicappers only, for me this is open to much debate. Like me for example, I have no trouble striking the ball I contact the spot most times. Its my putting and the right to left shots I sometimes play that give me a high score. But the clubs work just fine thanks. I am seeing a pro to fix my other problems. As for the Laurel  & Hardy sales team they are just that. These people are not golf pro’s they are salesmen, and I only take advice from pro’s. This why I walked into the store and told them what I wanted. —          *IMPORTANT*   Please remove the word  NO-SPAM when you reply          to my e-mail.

I have had the salesmen shit me with. You don’t want them clubs mate these are the ones you want, and not just suggestions they really try to shove them at you. I can get the Ping or Titliest clubs mate for 10 weeks. Try these there much better. When I stated I wanted blades the bloke in one shop argued with me and told me I did not want blades I wanted offset. Bering in mind he had not seen me swing a club. This is the best one though. I was told by a salesman that Callaway clubs were poorly made and a bad design and don’t consider buying them. He then showed me a set of Nickent irons that where Callaway x14 rip-offs and told me these where much better. He then went on to say that the bloke who designed Callaway irons also designed the nickent clubs as well. (I will let you figure that one out. HHHHmmmm. Cheap as chips too $150 au per club hahahah. Beware of these pushy salesmen especially in discount stores they know nothing about nothing and they try and make as much money on you as they can by selling you shit you don’t want. A more subtle approach is the salesperson whose favorite club happens to be the one you’re looking at (or was added to his bag recently). Repeat the test with another salesman and another set of clubs in the same shop and you’re likely to get similar results…
