Orlimar Trimetal, Moe Norman, and Natural Golf

Question:

I was watching a special on Moe Norman’s recovery from his heart attack, and they showed him walking around a driving range in London, Ontario. In his hands he carried three things: two boxes of Titleists, an iron, and a club with an Orlimar Trimetal clubhead cover (graphite shaft). Could it be Moe uses a Trimetal driver and doesn’t this kinda disprove you need "Natural Golf" clubs to use his method? Just a thought…                                                                 emb

I was heading out of Toronto one long weekend, trailing my family by a day because of work (not golf unfortunately). I took the scenic route to avoid the 401 traffic mess, and was cruising along when I see a hand-lettered sign that said "Moe Norman – Clinic Today!". Never having seen him in person, I pulled a U-turn like any golf-nut would do just in time to catch him warming up. The guy was amazing. He hits long and with unbelievable consistency. He was calling his shots as he worked it all over the place. His swing didn’t look as odd as I thought it would … you could tell it was mechanically sound, although unorthodox from the modern golf swing perspective. The clinic itself was more of a demo/show than anything instructional. It was fascinating just to hear him recount the "old days". It was well worth being late for the family gathering by another hour and a half. Any ways, back to the topic at hand, he didn’t have an Orlimar at this particular outing in July, but he had a huge bag, with about 25 clubs stuffed into it, and another 7 or so loose on the ground. He had maybe 4 Callaway woods, some old Taylor metal woods, and a fairly new looking Titleist 975D from what I was able to see. Most of them had been re-shafted, as well as heavily modified with lead tape. With the exception of the Titleist, they all had the crap beaten out of them. So, from what I can gather, he just plays with whatever is available, is given to him, or personally bought. I think I read that the only sponsorship he has is with Titleist for golf balls, but not clubs. Him using an Orlimar doesn’t surprise me, as it looks like he’ll try just about anything once. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I was watching a special on Moe Norman’s recovery from his heart attack, and they showed him walking around a driving range in London, Ontario. Moe’s clubs are all swingweighted very heavy…like E5 or higher. It would be a great spoof if some magazine did a "what’s in the bag" with Moe, listing his plethora of odds and ends…. "That’s my number 6 driver that I use to hit 240 yards with a high, 12 yard draw…" —

Moe use to bend his clubs a few degree upright, add lead tape to the club face and install fat grips. I read somewhere where his swingweight was E2. Also, his shafts were about 2 inches longer than standard. He’d grip down a few inches on the grip which made him even more accurate. Did you notice these things in the clubs he was using at the clinic? RR E-mail should be sent to rcdevil at sprint dot ca.
