Question:
My father, and brother have been after me to take up golf for over 20 years, and at age 50, I have finally decided to give it a try. My question concerns clubs. My daughter-in-law woks at Academy Sports, and can get me a set of clubs, for 25% off of retail. I was looking at a set of Wilson MBT clubs for $112, (her price). This seems like a good starter set, at a reasonable price, and I was wondering what some of you thought. Thanks, Mike

If you are of more or less average size for a guy then any off the shelf ’standard’ set of clubs will do. If you are somewhat shorter or taller then you might be better off getting a set of shorter or longer clubs from a custom clubmaker because you won’t be able to develop a good swing from badly fitting clubs. Custom clubs for beginners are still pretty cheap.

Pick you out a set at Academy, and go for it. For 112 dollars you are not getting much of a set, but it will get your feet wet, and at your age, you can always – go higher, later on. Be sure the set has a driver, 3w, 5w, and usually the irons are 3 through 9. the sw is additional, so is the putter, and bag. So zero in on the full smear – while you are at it – tell ‘em, I want a full set, or a chosen short set, which you can get by with. = Short Set A 3w, 5w, a 4, 6, & 8 iron, a sw, bag, and putter. Wilson is a good brand, not familiar with your set. === Mike said, My father, and brother have been after me to take up golf for over 20
