Question:
I don’t know about the rest of you, but Callaway has pretty low credibility in my eyes when it comes to revolutionary golfballs. Let’s face it: Callaway (with or without Eli) may be the best company at getting you to buy something the first time…but after the hype surrounding their Rule 35 ball release two years ago, how much of this year’s hype can you believe? I’ll wait at least 3 months after their release to see what the rest of you have to say about them, but I am preparing to be disappointed…. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Evening, all… Heard the tail end of a report yesterday about a new ball about to be announced that has a new dimple pattern. Suppose to be loooooong. Anyone have details? Bob
Response:
From the Callaway web site: http://www.callawaygolf.com/corporate/pressRelease.asp?Pr_Id=549 "The HX ball is the first ball to highlight the Company’s latest ball technology breakthrough, our patented tubular lattice network — a
criss-crossing network of tube-like projections that form hexagonal and pentagonal patterns around the golf ball. This unique configuration is more aerodynamically efficient than the traditional dimple patterns used on many golf balls, helping to create optimum trajectory and carry for golfers of all skill levels." Expected release in March 2002 at $58.00 doz MSRP
Reminds me of a "Buckyball" "The buckyball, being the roundest of round molecules, is also quite resistant to high speed collisions. In fact, the buckyball can withstand slamming into a stainless steel plate at 15,000 mph, merely bouncing back, unharmed. When compressed to 70 percent of its original size, the buckyball "becomes more than twice as hard as its cousin, diamond." http://www.godunov.com/Bucky/fullerene.html

Anyone have details? Sounds like a DDH with non-round dimples. The DDH had its varying dimple sizes and layout to increase the amount of area covered by dimples. There have been some balls in the past with hexagonal dimples, I found one on the golf course when I was a kid, thought it was kind of odd. Callaway is known for their gimmicks, I think this is yet another one. I’m sure the pros Callaway have signed will use it, but I’d be willing to bet any amount of money you wish there will not be a mass exodus from the Pro V1 camp.
It certainly won’t be using the DDH layout as Dunlop Slazenger will sue the ass of them. I took the press cliping to mean the dimples themselves are either pentagon or hexagon shaped. THe only modern (ie last 40 years) ball that I remember having hexagonal dimples was the uniroyal (still got a pink!! one at home), though many early balls used square/pent/hex dimples. While designing balls at Dunlop we came up with a ball that used a completely revolutionary dimple design (can’t say any more than they were not round nor were they square/pent/hex etc). Anyway, this ball was a great performer, significantly longer than anything else on the market at the time (88-90). It never made it onto the shelves as the marketing men didn’t like the "different" look to it!!! Sigh…… John

Response:
Callaway HX ( pronounced hex) in March. They are trying to avoid the Pro V1 debacle and fill the warehouses before they start selling them.
