Good Carry Bags/w Stand for Hilly Courses

Question:

I’ve had the Ping bag and found my grips got all tangled up and resulted in alot of yanking to get a club out – not too good for the grips. I now have a Sun Mountain Orbit, which I started out liking quite well, but now am getting very annoyed with the legs. They don’t always extend properly, which means I have to kick the offending leg(s) into position and, when storing them in my trunk after having unhooked the legs, have to fight the loose legs.  And when I’m forced into a cart, the oval-ish shape of the bag makes it ride too loosely and bangs both bag and clubs around. Sheesh. Anyone have a better suggestion for a carry/tripod bag?

I have a Unimax carry bag with an Izzo strap which I like very much.  It has tripod legs which activate when the bag tilts forward.  I used to have a problem with the legs hanging up on the ground (on hilly courses) so I’d have to kick them out.  Not sure if this is the same problem that you’re having, but I solved it by shortening the legs by a couple of inches.  This gives them more room to swing out, allows them to retract better, and has made the bag more stable in high winds. Sorry to hear about your problems with the dividerless Pings.  I need to replace my Taylor Made Pacesetter and I was strongly considering the Ping Hoofer (spell?). I’ve got a Bennington Walker – legs normally in.  They extend on a bottom flap/lever mechanism.  The bag has three full length dividers. It *is* a bit heavier than most other stand bags, but it is very durable.  I use the Loop strap, so I guess I don’t really notice any extra bag weight.

I have the Ping non-hoofer, and although the clubs bind a bit, it is better that the Highlander (very much like the Sun Mountaing, maybe even a copy) bag it replaced.  The Ping is very light, and I hav’nt found a stand bag that does’nt bind a little. FWIW, I find the clubs bind less when you put them in as you are walking, instead of before you pick it up. — Regards, Mark J Mathis Buster’s NE Florida Golfing Corral http://www.fcol.com/~buster

I have a bag by Jones that has two straps, legs, and full lengths dividers.  Might be a little heavier, but with the two straps weight is no problem.

I have the Wilson Staff, Fairway bag with a stand.  I like it alot, especially the duak strap.  It really takes the pressure off of the shoulder that normally caried the load.  It has the same leg system that Callaway employs (moves up for car or cart). My only problem with it is the dividers are made of a nylon material that is only attached at the top and bottom (no weight).  One of the dividers ripped out recently, and Wilson is going to replace the bag for free (10 months old).  I just wish they would sew the dividers up the whole length on the sides. I read a recommendation for Sun Mountain Orbit bag as a good carry bag with a stand. Any other ideas? Any experience with the Wilson Mountain Bag/removable stand?  I’ve heard that there is a problem with the stand falling off, especially after you have hit a miserable shot, thereby compounding one’s emotional crisis. — David Bourque Toronto Golf Travel Service Toronto, Ontario, Canada http://www.interlog.com/~bassethn/TorGolfED1.html

try the Taylor Made Grandstand Bag.

I just switched from a Highlander, which is very similar to the Sun Mountain types (not the orbit, however.  I am now using a Ping bag, which is lighter, and seems very sturdy.  I noticed just about all of the college players at the NCAA championships used the ping bag. I don’t know if Ping has a contract with the NCAA, or if they are just that good that nobody will use anything else, but I’m happy with my Ping bag so far. — Regards, Mark J Mathis Buster’s NE Florida Golfing Corral http://www.fcol.com/~buster

I’ve had a Sun Mountain 3-9 Deluxe for three years and it’s a great carry bag. Flat bottom allows easy use in carts. I haven’t had any problems with the stand or anything else. I’d buy another in a heart beat. Ric

Sorry to hear about your problems with the dividerless Pings.  I need to replace my Taylor Made Pacesetter and I was strongly considering the Ping Hoofer (spell?).  The folks at Supreme Golf claim that Ping will never put dividers in because it adds too much weight.  As you know, Sun Mountain stands come in two flavors: legs normally out and legs normally in.  I had an Eclipse and hated the normally out legs because the straps would bind and legs wouldn’t extend and because I had to fight the legs when I put the bag in the trunk.  Have you seen the SM Summit X?  It might be a good bag to consider.  However, I haven’t seen it anywhere around Indy.  As far as I can tell from pictures, it has normally in legs. I have a Sun Mountain Eclipse bag, which is great.  The only trouble is, with the slated bottom, it’s a pain in the neck when put on a cart.  Sun Mountain is a great company with a lifetime guarantee.  They re-built my bag for me after a year when the bottom piece split. I think most of the Sun Mountain bags have regular flat bottoms now.
