Question:
I used to use a set of callaway copies that were 1" over length and found that i was actually gripping about 1"1/2 down the grip to get a decent shot out of em. The only problem with that is it changes the lie angle. Might or might not be a problem….
that was with my old 2nd hand set, hence the reason i went and got fitted for some new clubs. Robb

Callaway will custom fit you for FREE at their Carlsbad headquarters. I did that a number of years ago after owning their clubs for almost 6 months. I went down and got fitted. 2 weeks later my clubs were on my doorstep, new shafts, grips and the heads polished and of course fitted to me. A very nice experience!
Most club fitters apply the cost of a fitting session towards the purchase price of a custom set of clubs. ML

– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Hi, I’m very seriously considering being custom fitted for a new set of irons. I didn’t realize that getting a longer set of irons would be so complicated, but apparently it’s not as simple as just getting an extra inch added on which is all I really wanted. I just yesterday learned about the lie angle and how this is just as if not more important than the length of the club in terms of how far I will need to bend when holding the club. I am 6′ 1"" and my problem is that with a standard set of irons I am having to crouch to much in my setup. My instructors clubs are 2 degrees upright and an inch longer than my standard set. I like the feel of his clubs and am considering going with something similar. He is also about my height.
I got my clubs custom fitted from American Golf discount. got a set of Mizuno Comp CT’s. I’m 6′ 2" and these are standard length but 3 degrees more upright (had to wait 3 weeks to get em from mizuno). Went back a few weeks ago to get em checked and the lie angle is now spot on. Hitting an impact board leaves a mark on the tape smack in the middle of the iron. I used to use a set of callaway copies that were 1" over length and found that i was actually gripping about 1"1/2 down the grip to get a decent shot out of em. Robb

I checked a local golf store and they do custom fitting there where they look at your swing and fit you with a club that is right for your swing type. I would appreciate any advice on how to get the best set of irons for my swing. I especially want to avoid making any costly mistakes like getting a set of clubs that doesn’t work for me. I am thinking of going with Calaway irons with a firm graphite shaft because that’s what I have now and I like the clubs other than they are too short for me. Also, how much more should I expect to spend for the custom fitting? Thanks in advance for any advice on this. Steve

You’re asking the right questions. Not only is the length of the clubs related to lie, it also changes the swingweight and flex of the club. A clubmaker must take at least all those things into account. Just because a certain set of clubs feel comfortable to you doesn’t necessarily mean they’re right for you. You have to ask yourself a very important question: Are you done changing your swing, and are you looking for a club fit to your current address position and swing, or are you looking for a club to fit you if you were to make a correct address and swing? (What you’re doing and what you should be doing might or might not be the same thing.) Most people advise that graphite shafts don’t buy you much in the irons. Also, how much more should I expect to spend for the custom fitting?
A good golf shop, or golf pro, should do it for free if you buy the clubs from them. This might take a half hour. There’s also something to be said for having a good clubfitter who is disinterested in what clubs you buy. In this case you should expect to pay the same as you pay for lessons – about $60/hour, and a good one will spend about 2 hours with you. This is far less than the cost of a single driver nowadays, and this could be the best money you ever spent.

Effectively, your instructor’s club is 4 deg upright, s deg is contributed by the extra inch overlength. You can locate a clubmaker and ask them for steel shaft weight iron heads, they are about 4 grams lighter than components made for both steel and graphite shafts. Use light weight steel shafts like custom light from true temper or Dynamic Gold Lite. These factors will bring the Swing Weight down by approximately 3 – 4 points compensating for 6 Swing Weight points due to the extra inch overlength. Make sure the clubmaker has a good reputation. Ask your friends who play custom clubs and their experience with their clubmakers. If you can’t get one, go to www.proclubmakers.org and use their locator. Regards Jef Goh
