Question:
<<<He didn’t say a diet, he said diet. The best way to loose weight is to exercise moderately and consume fewer calories. Changing your diet is different from going on a diet. As far as golf as an exercise, while it may not be a continuous aerobic activity, don’t tell me there’s not cardiovascular benefit from carrying a bag weighing 20 lbs up some of the hills on a few of the courses I play. Walking between holes can get your heart rate up, but not for very long. It’s the same excercise as walking 4-5 miles slowly. It isn’t great, but it is better than sitting on the couch doing 4-5 cpm (channels per minute) with your thumb. -Brian Thanks for clarifying my point Brian. Nothing like getting raked over the coals by someone who didn’t take the time to comprehend what he read. As someone who has fought a weight problem for 15 years, I know this stuff from experience. Anyway, can you tell me how I can limit myself to on 4-5 cpm on the channel changer? Allen B Fishing’s what I do for work…Bowling and golf’s what I do for fun…Someday I will wake up and realize I might have to get a job.

There have been some pretty stupid "diets" invented, but what’s the effective difference between "going on a diet" and "consuming fewer calories"? OK, so you’re just going to get an overweight person to exercise more and eat less. Easy isn’t it? Except that if and when they exercise more, they instantly want to eat more to make up for it. One of Gutbusters key dietary points is to change the routine of *when* you eat. The worst thing is the skipped or "coffee" breakfast, making up for it with a hearty lunch followed by an afternoon at the desk, followed by a full meal, then a night in front of the television, followed by a supper before going to sleep. This is great at depositing fat, because long sedentary periods follow eating. A couple of weekly sessions at the gym (if you could do them) won’t change much if you eat directly after then rest. As far as golf as an exercise, while it may not be a continuous aerobic activity, don’t tell me there’s not cardiovascular benefit from carrying a bag weighing 20 lbs up some of the hills on a few of the courses I play. I agree. I think that’s what I said: "In general terms, a slow burn is best. Golf fits OK with this idea, although it is perhaps not quite as constant as really needed." Golfers are doing valuable cardio-vascular exercise some of the time, but not when they stand around waiting for others to putt or swing. Six km in 4 hours is minimally aerobic. Many people could crawl 1.5 kilometres in an hour. Also, cardio-vascular benefit is not the same as weight loss. Colin Wilson

Diet is the only effective way to lose or maintain a specific weight. Also untrue. Most diets don’t work. Many actually make you fatter (ask many women who’ve tried them).

Thanks Colin, Sounds like a good program. I’ll definetly try reading more on this. Maybe a Metacrawler search under ‘gutbusters’. Apart from aspects such as changes to when you eat and drink rather than how much, the Gutbusters program includes controlled daily exercise over a longer period of time (like walking up to 1 hour in duration), rather than short, vigorous sessions. A recent study of three control groups (from short and vigorous exercise to long and less vigorous exercise) showed the group that exercised longest but with less vigour (e.g walking), actually lost more weight over a period of weeks than the other two groups (Melbourne Age, April 1998). Well, Tim, in the past month I’ve gone from 196 pounds (age 50) to 180 pounds, with golf as my major form of exercise. My goal is to get down into the 170-175 pound range. Playing golf in the midwest with temperatures in the 90s can burn off a lot of calories. You do need to make sure to keep your fluid intake up, however. I heartily recommend that you walk and either carry your clubs or use a pull cart. I’d suggest staying away from riding if at all possible.

I lose about 8 pounds during golf season by playing about twice a week. My eating habits are pretty constant, and I don’t increase my other physical activities, so the weight loss is mostly due to golf. However, when I used to caddy during the summer, I would lose 25-30 pounds. I would carry doubles for 8 or 9 rounds each week. By the end of the summer, I was pretty lean. Bob Dietrich

Exercise helps the second part of your equation not just by burning calories, but also by increasing your metabolism so that, even when not exercising, you are burning more calories than you otherwise would. I finally lost weight when I gave up "dieting" and started exercising at lunch every day. Too bad I don’t have time to walk a golf course every day at lunch! You’ll certainly drop alot of water weight in the heat…did you also adjust your food intake during this time?? Good Putting! (doesn’t burn any calories unless it’s a 5 footer for $10)

I weigh about 95 kgs, most of it is solid but there is some fat above the waist. From the waist down I am extremely thin due to the "walking" exercise in golf. Above the waist nothing changes! – I am now carrying my bag and this is "toning up" the above waist problem – I don’t think I’m losing any weight though. BTW, I’m 59 and been playing about 10 years. I’ve been real active all my life. Tennis, racquetball, softball, volleyball, surfing and bowling. About 4 years ago I had a knee overhauled, that was damaged from years of football. Well, that slowed me down alot, and I’ve gained a bunch of weight, and become a non-athlete.
Similar problem here. In my case I lose about five pounds during the golf season, but feel much more trim than that meager weight loss would suggest. I think the constant walking, in my case back and forth across the course, serves to convert fat into muscle. So, while the weight loss may not be dramatic, the benifits of golf are. For example, my calves become measurably smaller in diameter. My C$0.02 Gary To reply via email, please remove XXX from email address.

Hey Tim, Mark made some good points. On weight loss. As for me, living in the northeast I lose about ten pounds a season by doing nothing more then just walking the course. As for the burger at the turn "just say no" lol -ss

Two things that help are carrying your bag (rather than pulling it) and walking *briskly* to your ball. You still don’t get enough *sustained* effort to keep your heart rate in aerobic conditioning zones, but it is good moderate exercise under those conditions. — Gregory H.
